USB plugs

I seem to remember that when USB sockets and plugs were introduced it was to be "one size fits all" and good bye to mismatched cables for phones and cameras etc.
Just bought a new Cannon compact camera and not one of the four different sizes of cable in my drawer fits it and the one just purchased from Amazon for the model in question doesn't fit either!.
They might at least colour code the plugs and sockets.

Hi, Normally they come with a lead to connect the camera to a USB port.

Its worth checking what the connector supports, I had a Can(n)on camera which used an odd proprietary connector for USB but the same connector also carried composite video to connect to the telly. There wouldn't really have been room for a video out and micro USB connector.

I've downloaded the 245 page Cannon manual and found their part number and ordered again using that rather than the model number. It's got two micro sockets but they are wider and thinner than the micro cable that I have . I'm told that it is the same as a Nokia Type CA-179.

You really don't need to connect your camera via USB - far better to take the SD card out and plug it directly into the computer.

My Epson camera is similar, the same socket will take a USB cable or a composite video cable.

I am pleased I read all the posts before accusing you of trying to plug a usb cable into the mini hdmi port.
FWIW I have always pulled the CF or SD card and used a card reader to down load the images.

On some cameras like a small Nikon compact I have you need to use the USB port to charge the built in battery.

^^ My Nikon's the same. I use the USB to download and keep it connected until the battery is fully charged.

Frustratingly the camera has Wi-Fi, but it will only talk to an app on my tablet, and won't attach to a network.

My Nikon did not have a removable SD card. So a lot of new cameras don't. Yes I now you can get one to expand the camera stowage. Yes I have one. But it only gets used once in a blue moon.

my camera came with a USB lead, camera to laptop/computer. But it is different to my old Samsung. That one lead fitted my phone and the camera.

But my local electronic shops sells adaptor's, good prices as well. But the USB leads are a bit more than a high street store.

^^ I use XnView without any problems, but when I double click on the file still in the camera it opens with a strange photo editor, but if I click on the downloaded file it opens with the default editor (XnView)

I find irfanview will open and manipulate most image files, its a small application that is easy to use. Once opened and then saved, pretty much anything will then work, for example I then put them into cc-bridge.

I LOVE ACDsee - still use it daily. I only use it for viewing though. For image manipulation Irfan view is better.

I've been using Paintshop Pro since the late 90's and usually buy the latest version every few years as I'm used to using it.

Try gimp - yes seriously - similar to paintshop pro and FREE!

+1 and it works cross platform, I used it for many years jumping between AIX / Linux / Win and it was very good.

Everyone says gimp is free and is like photoshop, but it isn’t, yes it’s free but it’s not photoshop by a long long way

I also have about 120k images sorted with light room, I’ve tried several alternatives and they tend to struggle with more than about 25k photos

Its like photoshop for what 'most' people will use it for though, its no substitute for a good editing tool but to do a bit of manipulation its fine.
