Rebar fab and welding

OK got a job on matching up to existing work on a posh landscape job.

It involves rolled 100x5 flat with a rebar of 16mm on the top inner face as a path edging

Now I am going to weld the rebar with a few stitches (totally non structural). So am thinking of not buying w grade for ease and availability. I could do without any welds popping off though if slightly stressed - anyone done this? (thinking bit of a pre heat and a few 1" stitches with a 7018 or mig even).

Again peeps, non safety critical, non structural. Anything a problem? Being a first time for me

No input on the welding but using the rebar on top of the flat is a nice idea. Seen flat bar used in the past and would use myself. Watching with interest as I may duplicate in the future.

Yup!

Any readily-available grade of rebar will be fine - we weld rebar cages out of 300 and 500 grade deformed bar and never had any problems with welding with standard Sg2 or Sg3 mig wire.

Thanks I suspected as such, any steel stockist round your way keep it? Probably looking a Travis perkins I suspect though

We buy it from ROM in Sheffield, but we buy a fair bit. A lot of steel stockholders do keep it in, or as you say - a builders merchant.

Just avoid high tensile.

Never known the grades but I have successfully welded rebar with 6013 rods enough times.

However...
I would never use it anywhere where a failure would be a problem, particularly where safety could be at risk.
Some of it is really not suitable for welding at all, though I cannot remember exactly why or even which book explained it - just that it’s best considered a no for anything other than decoration.

So excuse the fact but is high tensile not part of being rebar? All I know is the actual weld able is marked a w grade is the std stuff from builders merchants OK then? I have to roll the stuff to a given rad
Made the calls looks like it's the builders merchants for the supply, only after half a dozen 6mtr so delivery is uneconomical as my stockist don't keep it

Re-bar is 'tougher' than S275/S355. High tensile strips the teeth of bandsaw blades
I don't think you'll have bother with what you're planning to do.

i think the key with a lot of non stuctural stuff is not to think about it to much. some things that can't be welded will, we know that its not rght and wont be as strong as it chould but even at 10% f the strength its plenty, you shouldnt weld iron worker punches to bright bar with sg2 to make centerpunches but you can, you shouldn't weld hss (drills) to bits of mild bar with sg2 but you can wount be a strong as it chould have been but plenty strong for meany uses

theres defantly 2 grades of rebar tho normal stuff goes trough the crop ok then other stuff makes a fair bang and dosent do the blades any good
