Find a decent Accountant, his advice will be worth more than his fee in terms of what you can claim by way of allowances etc.

As above get an accountant that deals with trades. Not as expensive as you think and worth it in the long run.

A percentage of your housing costs - rent/mortgage, electric, heating, broadband, water, depending upon how much of your house you use for office work.
As said, a good accountant will easily pay for himself - there's all sorts of rules, and loopholes.
Er no you dont.
You add it to your allowable expenses so save paying tax on that amount.
So about £15 if a basic rate tax payer.

I am the same, do my own books. I have told myself to get an accountant if/when I decide to go VAT registerd in the future.

Same boat as me. Been employed self employed for the last 4 years. Last 6 months properly self employed. No way I can avoid vat registration next year. Couple of decent jobs and I'm over the threshold just on materials.
Don't have time for that volume of paperwork so an accountant is my only real option.

I've heard good things about that VT Transaction. One of my regular clients has used it for years, and she is about as divvy as they come. She never has a bad word to say about it!

If your accountant uses the same software as you do then you should be able to give him a disc with your accounts on and let him work from there. Much cheaper than handing over a pile of paperwork and expecting him to plough through it.
He will still need your source documents to do random checks.
I used to use Sage but that became too bloated and slow so I built a spreadsheet in the same format as the self-assessment tax return and at the year end just copied the bottom line into the tax return and sent it off. Took about 20 minutes.

if you can do your own accounts you can do your own VAT return no problem
I do, I'm born dyslexic and now have brain damage too!
it's a piece of cake really, quick excel spread sheet, type in all your receipts, total amount and vat amount...
excel adds it up for you
then you stick the totals into the hmrc website every 3 months
job done
my dad used to do it in a ledger with a calculator... but he's pretty old school

A good accountant is worth his weight in gold. I would be lost without mine. They don't come cheap however. Sometimes it is better to find a book keeper to assist rather than a fully blown accountant. Depends on circumstances.

I should have said... I do my own accounts/vat... but I get an accountant to check over and submit the end of year stuff
think it's worth it for the extra piece of mind and covers my **** if I ever have an audit etc.
luckily I have no idea how much that normally costs, because half my family are accountants
I *think* it's about £500 ? (if you've done the grunt work yourself and they just need to check over it)
