Motorbike lock.

There have been some thefts in the village from garages recently and I’m trying to avoid becoming another statistic. For the 2 years I’ve lived here I thought it was pretty safe but it seems the low lives with sticky fingers have cottoned on. Where previously I left my scrap metal out the front I had 3 stainless sinks stolen the other week and it’s a good job they didn’t look in my garden waste bin as there’s over £200 worth of copper and brass in there at today’s prices.

In my garage are mainly hand tools and a few bits of electrical kit, namely a pillar drill tig welder, bench grinder and couple of angle grinders

My main concern is my motorcross bike. I’m going to be more cautious in regards to leaving the garage door open and not washing it down out the front. The first rule is don’t advertise what you have I guess!

I currently have 2 chains on it that I got with the bike, short work for the professionals. One between the rear wheel and frame and one from the frame to my workbench.

I’m hoping to come up with a system that doesn’t get in the way too much but incorporates a large bar passing through part of the frame and or wheel with a enclosed lock box. Anything that makes getting a grinder in difficult. I could even incorporate a 12v sound bomb that’s triggered off tampering with it. Anybody have any previous projects or ideas that would help?

If you always park it in the same place in the garage then what about a length of heavy channel bolted to the floor which you can weld a couple of pieces of 25mm (or thicker) plate that come up higher than the wheel rim. Drill holes in this and then have round bar, as large dia as possible, going through which you can secure with a suitable padlock on either wheel. Also incorporate pressure switches where each wheel rests in the channel bottom that go to an alarm.

It’s a 5 section up and over with electric motor. Not sure what I can do with it other than bolt it shut.

If its an up and over door put dead bolts in the bottom corners of the door, drill the wheel runner channel up each side and put a padlock though them.
A shed alarm with two magnetic switches on the door, a big f off chain and lock through the frame to a ground anchor.
You're ight about not showing off what you got! Get a security light that'll blind them, they don't like not being able to see what's coming to them.....
Last resort is a lightweight baseball bat by the bed.

Hope that has a lifetime guarantee so when you've bust it over some pikeys head it'll get replaced.

Wouldn't they then just remove & leave the wheel behind, or burst or battery grind the padlock?

Sadly, I suspect any security precautions will only serve to delay them - if they're really determined, they'll have it.

Low wattage, red filtered, IR lighting. Lots of them too. Low wattage so it doesn't tick off the neighbours, cause loss of night vision (for you!) and most importantly, doesn't give perfect deep shadow cover you get with 100w bulbs.

Multiple CCTV cameras, low light black and white is best. Then you get optimum resolution and much better low light performance for your bandwidth. Those are bare minimum requirements.

Almax chain and padlock into a ground anchor. They are a known quantity so a professional thief will hesitate and probably wander off elsewhere, a novice will struggle to get through it. Either way, they take a lot of time.

Up and over door sounds decent, needs an alarm system but making it super secure can often attract attention. decent padlock wouldn't do any harm I guess but as has been said, if they really want it...
