Slate window sills!

got some lovely deep window sills in my house which had horrible painted wood for sills.

Decided to push the boat out a bit and bought a load 10mm thick slate which I cut up with an angle grinder. Only my second time laying tiles so was a little worried that I’d mess things up a bit as the slate wasn’t the cheapest but it was far easier than expected. The hardest part was cutting the curves and actually getting the old sills off - I don’t think even NASA know about the glue that was used!

Did 12 in the end which took me all day. Here’s the result -

Looks brilliant, do they need sealed with anything to prevent accidental staining?

I’ve put a few coats of stain stop on them so liquid will bead off, probably won’t ever need doing again as It’s not as if they are going to get walked all over

Got a fair bit left over so trying to get ideas of what else I can use it for. I’ve got a coffee table made out of old railway sleepers so might slap some slate on top to do away with the need for coasters. Slate placemats are always a good one but I’ve got a ton of those already which I made from old roof slates

I used Caithness stone for the top of our firepit and counter top in the new bathroom.

No artists in the house? My in laws got a painting done on a slate, it was a very effective ‘canvass’.

I've found the casualty rate on glassware is a bit higher with slate counter tops.
No problem once you recalibrate your putting-down-sensor.

A friend has a traditional cottage in North Wales near the slate mines (Blaenau Ffestiniog) - slate windowsills, fireplaces, garden walls... very nice
