Anyone here familiar with Kodi?

Same here, 14Tb and counting, it's great having all your Tv boxsets & Movies available at the click of a button. I'm currently making my own .nfo files for the various episodes of Project Binky so that will be a "Boxset" on my tv as well

I store most of the films in .mkv the space saving is massive, But some discs i keep intact so i get all the extras/outtakes i have a folder for CCTV and dash cam stores of incidents its like my own episode of you've been framed..

Mkv is a container format that can host video, audio, subtitles files etc in just about any format you can think of, so the compression you see depends on the audio & video codecs used rather than the fact it's a .mkv file. It's a bit like using a filing cabinet to store printed A4 paper or microfiches of the A4 paper, they are both stored in the filing cabinet but the microfiche version is a lot more compressed.

Yes .mkv is just that lol. i meant that compare to 4 gigs on standard DVD i have a mp4 or mp5 video on the HDD, I am unsure what the rules about owning other formats of movies already have, Like i have a few films on DVD but they are not HD versions so i am unsure if is ok to have the HD version on my server...or do they expect you to by another HD version..

I keep all my media in the original file format rather than transcoding to a more compressed format just to reduce the file size to avoid any loss of picture quality, I watch my movies on a big screen so over compressed video soon looks terrible. Besides storage is cheap IMHO.

As I understand it (and I may be wrong) it is legal to shift the media from one format to another as long as it's for personal use only, but the problem is that it's illegal to break the copy protection that is on DVDs and Blurays... so assuming you can move the media from the disc to your hard drive without breaking any copy protection scheme then you're okay. As I understand it that is why there is the Ultraviolet code with some Blurays, so you can get a copy for your laptop/tablet etc of a movie that you own without having to break any laws, shame it's an overly compressed version that you can download.

If you own a standard definition version of a movie then you are expected to purchase it again if you want in 1080p format and again in 4k and yet again in 8k etc, otherwise the poor movie industry will go broke (I'm being sarcastic when I say the "poor" movie industy) otherwise when CDs came out you could have asked for a free upgrade of all the cassette versions you already owned. So sorry I would say it's not okay to have HD versions of SD films you only own on DVD.

That makes it clear, I don't mind paying for better quality and the latest versions of the bond series by lowry labs are more than worth paying for if you like the series, They are so good now you can see all the mistakes they made during filming such as camera men hidden in trees to film from other angles to get all the "action" in one take. Plus it makes sense if i was upgrading my car i would have to pay....

Its not all fun and games concerning free streaming...my Amazon stick with a magical wizard inside never gets used anymore as every time you select something to watch its never available to stream have the latest update too so i have just give up on it and put it into the "useless technology draw"along with all the other crap that promises to make our lives richer

Cheers but it’s not installing Kodi that’s the issue it’s finding a reliable add on to stream freeview TV over IP

Tried Kodi on the Fire TV box but couldn't keep up with the faffing about updating and waiting for a stream so binned it and got me a Now TV box to add to the Fire TV with the entertainment package, All the TV we can handle and a Humax for recording.

VPNs don't restrict access. They allow access because you can appear to be in another country by selecting the right server. ISPs can restrict and also monitor and record your access. A VPN gives you anonymity.

I run NordVPN and haven't really messed about with the settings or looked into it in too much detail, it just does it's own thing and I update it when prompted.

Got it as was getting knocked back from watching/listening to music and vids etc on youtube usually from US.

When I was poking about on it seem to remember it warning against streaming from certain sites and/or using some apps as they are bandwidth heavy.

You not came across that? Will have to have a look when I get the time.

I too use NORDVPN. It seems pretty robust, also it blocks Internet access if for any reason the vpn link stops, they don't keep logs and has protection against iP leakage.
