My trolley jack creeps down?

Hi guys I wonder if anybody can help me with this one, I have a 1.5ton trolley jack I have had it years and its a good piece of kit very study,

But of late as soon as I jack up my Landrover it starts to creep down, I have checked the oil and there are no leaks, as far as I can remember it is a Swedish make but I cannot remember what,

Any suggestions anybody.

Seals have started to weep, if possible needs the seals to be replaced. But it will be more likely a replacement jack is needed.

1.5 is a bit little for a landrover

Dependant on manufacturer, you can often get a service kit.

It's not Nike by any chance? I had one years ago but I jacked by Landy up with it and it wouldn't come back down again. Had to buy another jack to lift the vehicle off the first one.

The new one is a cheap & cheerful from Machine Mart, that tends to creep down too.

If yours is a Nike I'll have a look to see if I still have the instructions, they may list part numbers.

If there are no external leaks,then it must be bypassing the valve which allows it to go down again,before scrapping it would be worth seeing if there are seals in the valve by removing completly the the "screw" which is normally operated by the handle , take a picture may help,could be a ball that seats or a shaped end to the "screw" that comes into contact with the seat machined inside,may be some dirt in there ,worth looking before scrapping.

RTBCOMP I think your right I do seem to remember its a nike and have it in my mind it was Swedish, I bought it new many years ago and its a good bit of kit,

I did have the parts list but for the life of me I cannot find it bugger, if you could find your and scan it for me I would be your mate for life.

Hi,

mine started doing that last summer and I removed the 'let-down' screw. There was a very small bit of grit that came out in a small amount of oil but it semmed it was enough to stop it sealing properly.

It was OK after doing that.

Maybe a clean around with a Q-tip or similar or blow it out with an air line (but cover your eyes!) would help.

Glad you got sorted. I bought mine in the '70s, cost £25.00 new. I couldn't find my instructions and it doesn't seem to appear in the list on Nike's website. It had a pedal in the form of a 'U' to let the jack down.

Before you go teraing it apart and lavishing new seals on it.
