I never thought it was worth it. By the time you instruct your book keeper on what to invoice, which payment was for what and where to post receipts you could just have it done yourself.
I log own receipts, own invoices and reconcile own accounts. At the end of the year the accountant just does the tax calculation and does the end of year stuff. I did this when I had a business of four people and I still do it now as a self employed consultant.

Do you mean day to day accounts or end of year returns, I drink with a guy who does EOY
accounts for self employed brickies, plasterers and the like and its varies from £300 to £500 depending on whether they turn up early with neatly filed receipts or at the last minute with a carrier bag full of screwed up paper (with most it seems to be the latter!)

Reason I'm asking is cos I've swapped my degree from law to accounting and my first module qualifies me as a bookkeeper.
Wondering what sort of rates I could charge...

Years ago I remember freelance book keepers charging £35/hr. More recently I heard that book keeping doesn't get anything like that any more.
I always thought it was a good job as it's low risk, low overheads, easy to learn, comfortable and can be done from home.

If you can, use an accounting package or spreadsheet (agreed with your accountant which one) and present your accounts on a CD rather than paper. You will have still to provide the paperwork, but if it's presented properly the accountant will just have to compare the documents with the spreadsheet &c which is quicker than going through the paperwork from scratch.

Some places I've worked had only one "finance manager" who sent timesheets to a payroll company, sent and chased invoices, did the book keeping, and did the dogsbody work for the (outside) accountant to do the quarter end VAT and endofyear stuff.
So, no, in a small company a "book keeper" will also do credit control.
