Men in Sheds Northampton chapter has just featured on the regional news. The have outgrown THIER shed and looking for a bigger unit

That sink is now plumbed up in thee Shed at the allotment. I am waiting near the skip for the next one to arrive.

Just signed up for my local "M I S"
We're in a nice big workshop about 40-50ft square.
Enough room for 10? 12? benches + plenty of floor tools and timber storage.

The woman who runs it says they're short of timber.
I've just texted the bloke I got 6 transit vanfulls of 15mm birch plywood a few years ago, so that won't be a problem for long.

Wood, wood is simple to beg borrow and "acquire"
Sydenhams down here donates a lot to us, as does a joinery place and recently a big housing development. Have the manners to ask, you will be surprized.

Town councils will help, if approached in the correct manner, key word there.

I had heard about our local MIS but it was for older guys. Saw a leaflet on Monday that it had been opened up to all ages so I went along tonight to see what it was like.
It is in an industrial unit that is quite full with accumulated crap including a caravan destined to become a loggers cabin but project abandoned. They're planning a major clear out so they can get some benches installed on the walls & the few machines they have properly fixed in place rather than perched on mobile benches.

I was planning on sanding down a nest of pine tables I'm restoring but I got distracted by jobs that more suited my skills.

Somebody had donated a nice Hegner wood lathe but they couldn't get it working. It was 3-phase but with an inverter fitted to run on single phase. I got it running initially by resetting the inverter but the motor was making grinding noises if you wound up the speed. Took the belt cover off to investigate & after that the sod refused to run again. There was no interlock on the cover, the speed's going up on the inverter display but the motor's not turning.

The inverter doesn't look original & the wiring to it doesn't seem right. They have fitted a NVR switch but retained the original on/off toggle switch as well. I'm going back tomorrow armed with my electric meters, a few tools & a spare 3phase motor.

Somebody else had brought in a 135a SIP mig to learn how to use it. One of the members was a professional welder but looks to have had a stroke as 1 hand doesn't work. Between him instructing & me doing the donkey work we soon had the guy producing a decent bead. He was using a disposable co2 bottle, we were trying to get him to invest in a pub co2 bottle. I'm going to dig out my old co2 reg & give it to him, no use to me any more!

It looks like they are short on tools, I'll get a better idea tomorrow night & see what I can donate. I would have enough spare stuff to make a basic mechanics tool box of spanners, screwdrivers, etc. There's a nice steppach 12" planer thicknesser needing restoration so they would be useful for that.

They are also lacking an engineers vice, I have a little woden needing a home!

One started at Rayleigh a couple of years ago i donated a pile of Dads tools to them. Run by an ex college lecturer everything works & its tidy! Another is starting up closer at Thundersley, I did a garage clearance recently & gave them 90% of it.
I have offered to run a few junkyard instrument making sessions once they are up & running, might be fun.

The one at Thundersley is in the planning stage, Its going to be behind Thundersley Congregational church, corner of Kenneth road at the top of Bread & cheese hill they have quite a big plot of land & a lot of gear & tools stockpiled already. Bloke thats driving it is a good bloke. Its called the Beacon shed & has a fb page to keep people updated.
Dont think you have to be religous which is good!
