The way I was taught was root pass straight up the centre, then starting at the bottom a triangle weave; up to the left, hold, over to the right, hold, down to the bottom, hold and carry on with that pattern.

So what did we settle on, 6013 suck for vertical up? I've spent the last couple of days practicing and I'm happy with fillets but I can't v up or down for the life of me. The puddle just runs all over the place. Should I just give up on 6013 and get some 7018?
Welding 3mm plate with 2.5 6013 DCEN about 80amps.
Just out of curiosity @bR39Da what job would specify downhill 6013, obviously a suitable cel based 6013. Other than speed and bead profile I can't see any benefits.
I had a play running some 6013 downhill, beautiful beautiful bead, but can't see much penetration, if I rember rightly I was 140A dcen, just to keep puddle behind electrode.
See I think a rutile electrode runs lovely in the vertical up position they just ain't much good for anything other than general fab.
Try electrode negative at around 80amps and you'll find they stick like S-T-A-B.
Usually things become very fluently and running when you start letting that arc get longer or start hanging around in one spot too long. You've gotta get a move on with em. Personally if your gonna start doing v up do it with the rods where it's useful and crack open a pack of 7016/7018.
I had some seat time with a pack the other day as I was getting a bit rusty at it but after a couple of hours I was banging in some cracking multi runs on the vertical.
Thanks for the tips guys. 6013 are what came with the welder which is why I'm using them. I messed around some more at 70amps 2.5mm DCEN and got these results. I had amps too high before and like a 45 degree push angle so lowered amps to 70 and changed rod angle to about 90 degrees. Straight up for the root pass, weave for the cover. I can't get it smooth yet but am I on the right track? I just finished my first box if 6013 so dunno if I'll get another or just grab some 7018 instead.
Personally I'd run the weave a little hotter and on dcep, 7018 imo are nicer to run, and alot easier positionallu, re strikes and tacking with them can be a pain though.
