Stick welder

So I work in an engineers when they bought a lot of equipment from a company that closed down

This was in the pile of stuff and I got to keep it

Any info on it? How old is it

Still have to plug it in and see if it actually works

I've never stick welder before so hopefully this works so I can give it a bash

It's almost certain to work.

It'll also be one of the best welders you will ever use, in my opinion.

good old solid unit they normaly last for ever be suprised if it dont work but will need a good power supply to run it

I had the same machine bought new in about 1972 ish, give or take a year, I think I paid about £140 for it from our local farmers outlet which was a fair amount of money at the time.

It should work fine on most of the range from a normal 13amp plug, although I used to blow a few fuses on the upper range and larger welding jobs.

It doesn't count when there's a six inch nail in place of the fuse!
I'm surprised that the one I use hasn't worn out the disk in the electric meter.

Lovely to use though.

Luckily I never had to resort to unsafe tricks of the trade, you soon learn however to make sure your rods are dry and you became an expert at striking up, a sticking rod meant a new fuse and in those days there was no Sunday trading to get a replacement, I was constantly moaned at for pinching fuses out of other things

mine's been under the bench for 40 years and still going.....
forget the 13amp fuse...u need a 30amp cooker supply...!!!!!!
mine also runs 440v.......still got it but bought a bigger one of the same type 225amp.....and oh so sweet.......also run a BUZZ box for mobile welding from a genny.......
like a "Cockroach" these welder's will still be here when the Robot's take over.....

Great piece of kit, almost bulletproof. I have a near identical Oxford unit I’ve made or repaired loads of stuff with , great when welding heavyish sections. Concur on the 30A cooker supply.

Cheers sadly I only have a normal power supply to my unit hopefully can get it high enough for what I need which is 4/5mm

I had one of those in the very early 70s, Brand new - second hand, First guy to get to see it apparently got a rod stuck and blew the 13amp fuse in a normal plug, maybe thought he had broken it, I got it for £30-00, Used it for years with a decent plug fit. The true bench mark of what smallish arc welding sets should be,

u would have to remove all the bolts and lift the transformer out to check . I lifted mine out with a hoist. there just under half filled . the level rises when the transformer is put back in

And don't touch the oil as I believe some of it contains nasty stuff that wouldn't be seen in anything modern.

I do know that it's been mentioned on here a few times and therefor it seems sensible to pass it on. There's no need to contact it for a level check and it'll avoid anybody sticking their hand in for whatever reason.

These things could probably be checked by weight, if we knew what the figures were. There's need to be two figures mind, one for a clean unit and one with a real layer of grime on the outside like many of them have

sort of a silly thing but why not just weigh it instead of taking the top off

as mine would weigh 60kg

it would only loose oil if it was leaking . ive had mine over 40 years
