Zonealarm free firewall and antivirus package does me. It can be difficult to find because they would prefer you to pay for it.

What's wrong with the free anti virus that's built into Windows?
The aftermarket anti virus software is heavy because people buy the software with the most features so software companies just add pointless extra features. The extra features have no real value and slow the computer down significantly. All that matters is the quality of the virus definition database and the one in the Windows built in antivirus is just fine.

avg used it for years no problems apart form once that was a mates fault sent me a virus in an email that i opened as it was from him
10 plus years apart from that i also install it on all the friends and family pcs as well so know a fair fw pcs with it on normaly only problems i get is when it runs out and they dont upgread it

I used to use AVG until they decided that they were entitled to hijack users computers and took a while to back down.

used to use avg until it removed everything that it thought was a virus around 2004 left that went to another source much better
windows firewall its better than nothing however nothing is what your getting using it its rated one of the worst out there

It's capability to remove viruses is same as any other antivirus.
Every security software varies on bench tests on it's ability.
It's just not in Microsoft's interest to be spending money and updating the data base like the security companies do.

So, I've recently been writing some "malware" (put down the pitchforks at the back), because I had a situation where I had to evade the anti virus's on the systems I was attacking (with legal permission to do so). They were coded to not be self replicating/malicious in action and used in a sandboxed environment so no risk of them escaping. They literally were designed to compromise the system and plant a high privileged file to prove it had worked.
I did some very low level stuff to my malware to evade detection and only one av managed to spot the results every time in a test rig of 62 anti virus engines.
The anti virus engine that did so well? microsofts windows defender. Make of that what you will.
I might be able to evade that defender install with a few more techniques, but for my purposes defender on the test machine had been disabled in favour of another product so I didn't have to worry about it.
The reason I always say with current updates is that I also tested it against a sandboxed machine that had a rather outdated defender install doing some extra testing, and it sailed past it unseen. There's also the danger that if something bad does install itself, it'll probably look to try and disable/cripple defender in some way being part of the OS.

I've picked up something which seems to open random sites without warning. I think it was as a result of trying to close one of those ads which appear at the start of YouTube videos - I wanted to view one and copy it [as a link] to a car forum, if it was suitable to answer another Member's question.
I believe I missed the little box with the X in it and clicked on the main body of the ad instead.......
I've run Malwarebites and Microsoft Security Essentials but it's still happening occasionally. There was mention of an Extension to Google Chrome to block the tabs which appear, but I'm a) not sure if this is another 'trap' for the unwary, or b) would it work anyway????? 
Failing that, how do I isolate/remove the malware without having a degree in computer studies. I regard computer software like I do elecktrickery, I don't like working with something I can't see.......
