Small lathes

Evening guys.
Other than myford 3s 7s 10s ECT. What other small vintage lathes are there. As I need a small one to machine some parts for my Colchester student lathe.

Not that I'm biased, but Drummond's are a nice, well built bit of kit, and usually under-appreciated, which means the prices tend to be reasonable most times.

I have looked at many different models. Myford are an ok size as I could bench mount it if need be. But myford prices are steep for a good condition unit...will see what I can find..

Nice little ml3 needing a new home. Works but needs TLC. Have a new old 3 step pulley to replace the worn ally one. Hard works done. Completely stripped cleaned and rebuilt.

ive noticed it does depend on the size that you are wanting to mill up with a small lathe

even a hobbymat holds its price well

ive looked at a few smaller lathes than a myford lathe the ml4 was small enough that i had but sold on

however its finding one that will mill from 3 or more to length of say 6" 8" 10" or 12" length would be ample enough id say depends on what length you want to lathe up in the end

its the thickness counts the most on the smaller lathes some wont even lathe a full 10" bar say 2" thick due to its cross slide been in the way however with most laths they say center points 3" or 5"

Most of the bits I would like to machine up are small. Like a new tool post stud. Some T bolts. I have a local machine shop that would do them. But would sooner get a small lathe and plod away on my own. It would mainly be use for the refurbishing of the Colchester student lathe I have as well as making bits for the other machines..

I have a little Boxford and its very good, its limited by my ingenuity not the machines accuracy or capacity.

Whilst my Colchester isnt as tidy it is much more rigid but unless I really need its bigger capacity or screwing etc I turn to the little Boxford all the time.

I like my atlas 10f lathe. Cheap'ish and cheerful, and a reasonable 5" centre height.

Not enormously heavy either.
