Well I will be the first to admit I have zero building skills.........


Just decided to install this monstrosity I knocked up the other day - worried now it might expand and demolish my building!

It was rather a tight fit - had to tap it in with a large hammer - is that ok?

Box in box and won't have any worries. Let it telescope. Easier to fit too.

Yeah always flipping freezing.

I know it's not pretty but should do the job.

I filled the bolt holes with metal filled epoxy so they probably won't be too easy to remove.......

Right, according to an online calculator...

If that bar was 1 metre long and you heated it by 100°, it would then be 1.0012 metres long.

If your walls can't cope with that, it didn't have long to live anyway

1 thousandth per inch per 75 degrees is the rule of thumb isn't it? That's almost spot on.

Concrete lintels expand more than that, I'd know, there's a huge crack in my bedroom wall.

Having said recently how easy it was to build my first ever shed from breeze blocks, I did a very similar thing but way more stupid. Made up a window frame and the bottom rail was a tight fit. Really tight. I assumed it was because of the square edges but it went in with a lot of pressure.

Skip forwards a few years and my planning appeal was granted (!) if I removed the apex roof. So in a fit of pique, I went up there with a chainsaw and let it drop. The shock pinged a crack in the wall, starting in the bottom corner of the window frame but only as far as the ground.

Filled it with some silicone sealant, covered it up with cladding. Looks ok now, hasn't even fallen over once...

It was - I work to thou - shame your average builder works to feet.........

Do you like the nice curve in the left hand plate? At leaset nobody can accuse me of not getting enough heat into those welds!
