Find out who else uses oil in your area and then arrange a shared delivery, this will give you savings over the delivery charges. Also the more you buy the cheaper it gets.
In the village there are 6 of us that buy oil from the same supplier. We all have a standing order set up for a fixed amount each month and the delivery is all done on the same day. Saves a lot of money this way

Now is a good time, the trend is up at the moment. I bought 1500L at 36.9p/L this week.
The oil clubs are fine if you regular top up of smaller amounts but I find the cheapest way is to fill when the oil is cheap whether you need it or not. It will depend on the size of you tank though. Mine is 2500L so no issues getting a decent amount.
You have to be very wary of contracts as you often won't get the best price.
We have a handfull of suppliers local and I used phone around for best price but in reality apart from one supplier was always different to everyone else the price never varied by more than 0.5p/L on a 1000L so now I just the supplier who provides the best service. They always phone the day before even on Sundays, they don't insist on payment up front. If you have a proven track record with a supplier then they will often help you out if you really short of oil.
I've seen many posts where people think they are saving several pence per/L in oil clubs but they reality is of they were buying 1000L + then they would get the best deals. The margins are so tight that nobody is saving that much. Our supplier doesn't hold stock and they buy from which ever stock holder is offering the best prices.
If your tank is low then it's a good time to check if there is any debris in the bottom, plastic tanks are supposed to be unaffected by condensation but mine still has some settlement in the bottom.
One thing that is strange, people think that gas is way cheaper than oil fired, my 1500L was £581 and that would easily see us into 2019 as it filled a 2500L tank.
There is a garage south of Hereford that has a heating oil pump and we have some friends who invariably end up there with some 20L barrels during the year! We've got a remote sender on our tank so we can monitor it but we never get close to being that empty.

that would be nice, one disadvantage to working from home is that we use up our 2500l tank in approx 5 months across the winter obviously last longer across the summer but it hasn't ever lasted a year round between refills
a regular supplier is nice for when you forget to check regularly and find the sight glass has emptied
and they can usually help us by delivering next working day. we use "Stevenage oil" who are based in letchworth so might be useful for you, certainly worth a callEDIT: you are responsible for the condition of your tank so worth taking a good look at it before getting it filled. When we moved to this house we found the tank had rusted out which was why it was fairly empty

I get an additive added as well. I order it at the same time and the guy adds it in the tank and leaves the remainder with me. There's no delivery charge for me, price just goes up and down with the price of oil. With the oil price down you should get a good price. I use Connon Brothers up here and never had an issue.

Shop around - I don't have oil but from friends' experiences, their normal supplier will price match a lower price to retain their business.

Thanks chaps, we have a 2500-3000 litre tank and its a third ful now. We're using about an inch a month going by the dodgy sight glass rigged up to the feed pipe, it would probably get us into next year but we'd have to buy more in February / March time so best to do it now.
What am I looking for with the tank? It's steel and bloody big! It's supported on two block piers, the sides look ok the bottom has what looks like surface rust and peeling paint. The plumber that sorted the boiler said it looks good and solid but could do with a clean and paint.
I'm get some pics later.

I love using oil. Cheaper than gas! And a lot lot easier than chainsawing up 44 tons of logs!
Fortunately the high oil prices should be a thing of the past. The Arabs used to hold us all to ransom but now American/Canadian shale oil is booming the prices will be far more stable.

A few years ago the tanker drivers here in Crete went on strike and our local garage ran right out of petrol and diesel ....it was summer time so I guy a know in the next village was using his heating oil in his truck .....The government have got wise to this ... I think now you pay the same price for road fuel and you have to claim the tax back when you do your tax return ......Men in suits always make you pay ......
It is dyed yellow now in the UK to stop this happening - but you are allowed to use cooking oil and that is yellow as well...............

Order well in advance, if you want it now you always pay a premium. i dont bother with the local group, two reasons, the guy who runs it does my head in, and I always get it cheaper by buying in bulk, always over a 1000ltrs, 2000 if I can, our tank is 3000 ltrs, but if we run out we can heat with logs and the back boiler. Not that we have ever run out yet.
Our local supplier will price match, I also have an account with them as they are an agri supplies place too, and also supply our cherry.
One thing I will say with the monthly payment schemes, I know a few who expected more oil when the delivery came after the prices drooped, but they were told thats what you agreed to pay when you set up the monthly scheme.

a thousand litres usually lasts us most of a year including winter. Either I'm scrooge or you need to get your place insulated.

We use a local firm . They do the shopping around job and get the best deal for THERE customers , always cheaper than the club's .
Once you are in they do an emergency service for THERE customers ; if your tank gets a leak or bursts they will come round straight away with a spare tank , empty your tank into it and plumb it in . And if you run out they'll they're straight round with 400l .
They monitor what you use and organise all your deliverys . We just get a call every now and then to say when the delivery will be .
Maybe a firm that does this in your area .

We live in an old house which is a bit drafty and has big rooms, smallest bedroom is 12x12. We do have a wood burner but 2500l in 12 months would scare me let alone 5. Our usage dropped quite a bit when we installed a new boiler replacing an Stanley (like an Aga but not running all the time). We don't like the house too warm and we spend quite a bit of time outside so the house feels warmer and it's very rare we have the heating all day.
I used an old heating oil tank for my diesel once, I drained but there was some left and it ruined the pump on the tractor. Certainly shouldn't be used neat

Here it's the same stuff it comes out of the same tank just a different pump at the garage in the village ....
