Helicoil question

I have an M10 thread in a manifold that is very poor and keeps coming loose, can I drill and tap for an M10 helicoil or do I need to go to an M12?

There's enough room on the flange to go up a size but it will mean buying new studs and nuts, which I've just done in M10 because I thought they were the problem

My preference would be to helicoil as it retains the original fittings, no need to modify gaskets etc so keeps sealing area. I use them a fair bit on motorcycle engines, if into alloy will be stronger than the original thread.

I would keep it m10 standard

It's into mild, full exhaust on the freelander and it failed on the manifold to downpipe joint, the studs come loose in the manifold and I thought it was cheap studs, but it's just a poor thread

not sure about freelander manifold design but would it be possible to drill it through and use a nut, lock washer and bolt

No room on back side, was going to Mig a nut on

A M10 helicoil is designed to fix a pulled/stripped M10 thread so all you have to do is replace it with the same size helicoil.

You can get stepped studs Mr @Kayos . You could just tap the manifold m11 and get m11-m10 studs.

Helicoil wire size is 1.0mm so for M10x1.25 you'd use a M11 tap

I retrieved a little B.A. Helicoil set from the rubbish skip at work, It was thrown out by our maintenance after a clean up!!

Never used one before and will probably never use this either!!

Possibly, I think at our works B.A. threadings were usually found on electrical stuff!!

I find BA threads on lots of old English bike parts: threads under 1/4", tank badges, points, Magneto's etc, so plenty are used in restorations.
