Old tractors anyone?

nice pics there mat, some interesting kit. was out with our mate a couple weekends back picking up a major. wouldnt mind one myself but i think mrs TBD would strangle me if i brought one home

I'm more vintage lorries honestly, but if its old and interesting I'm there. Last year I managed to get to jump start and drive two mine trains. Cracking. These old tractors belong to an 'association' and they are looking for a mechanic, I gave them my phone no. The 'president' also supplies the cider. (My head this morning), if he makes cider chances are he does moonshine.

can remember just 2 of you leaving the tractor going in gear, jumping off walking along side loading/ throwing lines of bales up to your stacker on the trailer, then jumping back on at the end of the field turning round and back again that was before they got the flat 8 and loader

I remember sitting on a bale in the bale sled and then getting a good battering by the rear gate(pre flat 8) as me and all the bales came spilling out the back when I wasn't concentrating, a one time only mistake .. Riding on trailers was the norm even on the road or stood in the doorway of the cab.

Riding on trailers was the norm even on the road or stood in the doorway of the cab.

At the farm I worked at, the tractor and trailer rig was traveling along welsh road a mad road at the best of times with no footpath just hedges and a drunk truck driver tried to pass and cut in hitting the trailer then had another go at the tractor a ford 7000, knocking it right over on its side, the lad in the trailer went over the hedge and the farm owner was in the tractor cab with a roll cage he suffered badly was in hospital with concussion and ended up with parkinsons from it we believe, now the lad that was in the trailer was unmarked ------not a scratch, and was working the next day. SO what was safe ??

Whilst reading this I also had the radio on 27.555, someone in France calling CQ who said his location was "tractor mobile" quick contact and I imagined him sat on one of those old things

As a milk delivery boy [while at school, not last year ], I used to [along with others] sit on the flatbed back of the farmer's truck, legs dangling over the side. Truck drove slowly and we would grab 'x' number of glass bottles of milk [iirc 6 was as much as we could cope with ] and run from house to house, leaving full ones and picking up the empties. Then catch up with truck and jump back aboard.

Should I now be receiving counselling.........?

My wife's grandfather told me about how they use to haul grain with a TE20... a 3 ton trailer with greedy boards loaded up to the gunnels and when they came down the steep hill from the farm they use to dip the clutch to go faster .

the problem with that is the clutch plate is spinning faster . A guy did it on a ford stuck in low gear once and blew the clutch plate to bits my guesstimate was 15.000- 20.000 rpm
I did it on the aston hill 50 limit, on my nuffield with 5ton of earth on trailer on sunday morning dead quite but knocked out of stick and ended up overtaking 3 cars !!! didnt need to but it back in stick for 1.5mls !!

6"x 6" straw roundbales ,baled with an 1046 & an international baler, on the back of the dexta with a buckrake ,& the buckrake chained up to the top link hole because the lift used to drop, 2x 56lbs slung over the front axle to try to keep the nose occasionally down ,flat out across the stubble field bouncing out of the seat as much as you werent able to dip the clutch to exit the gate, those were the days , was probably 10 or 12 at the time thought it was great.

I remember somebody "freewheeling" a MKI Transit with the V4 engine down a steep hill then dropping the clutch at the bottom - it broke the crank !

I'll agree these kind of things probably don't happen so much these days, but I know I got into plenty of "oh ****" situations with modern agri kit.

Getting a tipping grain trailer stuck in the elevated position inside a barn was a learning experience, in hindsight. The connector on the hydraulic hose had jammed, so I couldn't let it down, even disconnected. So I popped out and got the telehandler, propped the underside of the trailer body on the forks, jubilee clipped the offending trailer hose to the drawbar and took a felling axe to the end of the hose. Won't be doing it like that again...

I didn't feel I could ask for help though as I'd had a trailer leaf spring snap completely while carting wheat the previous day which was a massive faff. And the week before I'd got a puncture while towing the combine header on a busy A road between the temporary traffic lights that reduced the road to one lane. Tyre disintegrated on me as I was trying to get onto the verge. Ended up blocking the road completely for an hour and a half.

Might not sound like much, but when you're 16 and you're 2 weeks into your first job its a bit different.
