Mine are over 40 years old & they are still crap. I can never cut anything square with them, it always wanders off the same way. Thought they might have matured by now!

They made good frames, And straight cutting is 99% down to the guy doing the cutting, Just got to watch every stroke, Nice and relaxed, sixty strokes a minute and subtle adjustments with each stroke, (and a canny bit of practice of course)

I don't think it's me, I would agree with you about operator error, but nobody else seems to be able to cut straight with them either. I'm not going to chuck them out though.

A very handy tool to have hanging behind the vice, think the same knackered blade in mine has been for a couple of years now.

Also pretend your hand is a pistol, index finger pointing forwards

I have never done the finger thing, But constant gentle adjustment, It just becomes second nature after a while, Starting the blade on your scribed line etc, moving the blade back and forth without this slight guidance and expecting the blade to cut true is a definite non starter every time,

1st day/week/forever of apprenticeship , in the raw materials store .
Cutting stock into bits to go off into the machine shop .

My first job on the first day as an apprentice was cutting 3/4" dia rod into 3" lengths for hinge pins for farm gates. Everything round up to 2" bsp was cut then with the hacksaw, 1/2" and under was cut with bolt cutter. We did have a guilotine for flat bar.
