Today my eldest daughter got her medical degree course confirmed at Lancaster . Six years from now we will be expecting a doctor in the house
Gone for her actual A level results now but it has to be the least 3 A for the offer to be official made this morning
Not bad but I fear we are going to be brassic for the next five years, then her younger sister will be enrolling on whatever.

We knew first thing this morning b
Before she got her grades (the uni gets them first). Confirmed grades at 4 a grades in her a levels.

At least you know you are investing in something that can provide a great future, I work with colleague who always had their hand in their pocket and their kids are even using the degree anyway and would earnt more money just getting a job(I know that's not what it's all about these days)

I didn't go to Uni but I'm sure the first thing I would have had to do when I arrived was find a job.

I heard on the radio the other day the money lent out for student loans excedes money lent by some major banks by a huge margin

My brother & his family all live in Sheffield, it's a lively city, you'll like it there. He went to Sheffield uni in the late 60s must have liked it as he's been there ever since.

Isn't there 2 uni's in Sheffield? Which one are you going to. From what I recall there is one close to the city centre & one on the outskirts, Broomhill area.

Well done, now the work starts! My niece has not long completed her doctors course & is now doing her hospital time after graduating.

All my kids and grandchildren have done really well with uni degree's etc, Two of the girls from Blackburn, elder one now twenty two got a good degree in criminology, then jetted off for this last year to travel the world, she should be back the end of September, She studied hard but didn't miss out any partying whatsoever Had a great time, Her two year younger sister was all set to follow in her footsteps, looking forward to the wild student life, My daughter persuaded her to apply for a management "apprenticeship" with BEA systems for which she was accepted from thousands of applications, She was not delighted at all with the thought of missing her elder sisters experiences, BUT she Resigned herself to it, After her first year she is loving it, she is twenty in September and earns in excess of £23000-00 a year PLUS BEA Systems pay your degree uni fees into the bargain, Not too shabby for a youngster . Proud to death of them all, My job is done,

I'm sure you are aware that Lancaster is a nice city, I grew up around there and my Dad actually owns a lot of student accommodation in the town,
It is a very good place for students and also a great university.

Nice to read your [and the others'] reports. It's all too easy for my/our/the 'older' generation to dismiss young folk today as work-shy, drug-taking, benefit-scrounging, feckless layabouts, which is clearly not the case.......but 'twas always thus - no generation has ever been regarded as "up to the mark" by the preceding one.

Yeah, there's "The university of Sheffield" and "Sheffield Hallam", I believe Hallam is newer and people I've spoken to about it seem to think it's lesser. I'm going to Uni of.

Maker, be prepared to see plenty of "work-shy, drug-taking, benefit-scrounging, feckless layabouts" when at Uni, although its not always their fault, some courses only have around 5 teaching hours a week.

On an engineering course you'll be working harder than almost everyone else at uni. Towards the end of mine, we were missing teaching hours to get coursework done. My experience was that it was generally the medical, dentistry, chemistry and engineering students in the library watching the rest of them enjoying a beer in the sun. I think in my second and third years during term-time, I could count the days off I had on one hand. And days at Uni were usually at least 10 hours. A day's example timeline was go to lecture, to the library to do some coursework, another lecture, back to the library, lunch in the library, another lecture, back to the library until 2100 or later if there was a deadline close. By the end of it, I'd had a lot of breakfasts and dinners in the library too. Don't try to eat in the Engineering dept., they always smell of BO, but by the end of the course you'll be used to it.

Hope this hasn't put you off, the list of good things is far longer than the above!

Very big advancement in career, Was a local lad that went to school with my two kids, They both went to uni and have done very well since, This other lad trained as a male nurse, then after a few years decided he wanted something better, Went to uni a bit later in life and qualifies top of his class, and is now a Barrister, Big change eh,

Hallam University is the old Polytechnic.

I used to be based in the Control Engineering Department at the "proper" University when I worked for Perkin Elmer Data Systems. I'll be remembered for overwriting a professor's hard disk cartridge because it was labelled "For CE* use Only" and he'd put his data on it without altering the label.

*CE = Customer Engineer(ing).

What are the job prospects/salaries like for that, my daughter got her higher results last week, 5As (inc maths and physics), I told her she could do anything with that but she wants to do graphic design.
