Thank you deep crater indeed, I have see pros on videos not really seriously tapping / pecking but lightly tapping and starting immediately, or coming from the base of the plate on its corner.
Sure noted jow the coating is fragile, if I stick some break near the sticker if I am lot cautious (opening the sticker and break the weld carefully) even then the coating can be damaged (and I talk of Lincoln 7018-1 or Esab 48.00).

I am impatient to use those tips but (excuse me I am for 12 days yet in the Indian Ocean La Reunion, for some hard work ...

Heres some experiments with the 23 years old 7018s ground out to look for pores on the starts and a couple of fillets to try them out
Once youve burnt a few thousand rods you will get the technique

That's a nice clean start Zep. What sort of technique did you use there?

Drag /scrape the rod down about 20 to25 mm toward where you want the start to commence it leaves what we call a smoke trail it s a thin line of weld and slag that now the arc is burning properly burns that out when you start moving in the opposite direction . Most people learning try and do it too fast no hurry just nice n smooth motion

Back from "hard work" in the Indian Ocean I could try your tricks and find them excellent. No porosity, restart easier, I thank you 10000 0
ps (I really did work there, sort of worholidays, I like it , and it is possibly planned again in a few months, so all positive !)

I also received those fantastic gold covered glasses from Aulekro, incredible! I could see details as in full daylight, the blue color is quiet for the eyes, too bad I did not have them before. (I think I will use grade 11 for 7018, 10 for 6013 )
I also discovered that making a halt, not welding every day, is more advantageous than I thought, I did not loose tactile feel.

I did make some exercices with small 2.5 7018-1 lincoln, and was welding "without thinking" just managing the puddle without knowing how.. (thanks to the Aulektro glasses, yes

ps, I dont find the method to correct bumps and 'holes' of a precedent bead or from the surface of the precedent passes.

I melt the extra, or insist where are misses, but it does not flatten as much as I wish.
Because I often work on assembly made from precedent exercices the initial shape is not really neat, for instance beads are covering one side of the angle here.
So I do my best to obtain a neat product but it is a little off limit I did not want to grind , as the shop is clean again, and I have not yet installed the curtains for such job.
