Project barn owl.

I've never done anything like this before and I am a big admirer of people who post here regularly with the beautiful sculptures they make from scrap metal. I started this a few weeks ago and it's not something I'm going to get round to finishing any time soon as it's just a little fit in project I want to have a go at and see if I'm any good or not. Why barn owl well should it turn out half decent it's a gift for my dads garden as he has a few he's bought of various bird types and my favourite bird is the beautiful barn owl. Any way down to the pic. I've only achieved its face so far and after a couple of beak revisions I'm half settled on this one. It has some resemblance of the bird I think.

1st barn owl I ever saw was at a factory I was working at ity got disturbed in the roof and flew in to a window and fell on floor I went and picked it up and its head just flopped .I thought its neck was bust , held it for a while and it started coming round then its claws started digging in so ran to door and let it out and it flew off 1st and last time ive seen one in 60 years. very impressive bird

I'm so lucky where I live. I get to see them very regularly on a summers night. They are simply stunning birds.

I can see things I'd change like I think the eyes need to be bigger and the face more rounded but it's not bad for a no1 go at it.
I've got the rest of it to do yet so plenty of time to balls it up lol.

Barn owls, can remember being out over Barry Buddon (Army Range) with the Buzzards, the male buzzard was baiting but we couldn't see anything but we decided to let him go anyway, next thing a hell of a screeching and he had caught a barn owl. Luckily we were on the scene quick and got it from him and it flew off seemingly uninjured.

He was lucky to find that. They usually keep themselves hidden well away in redundant buildings and barns during the day light hours and pop out at night for some field mice.

It was early morning but they do also fly in daylight over there, it doesn't get many people on that part of the range, or at least back then it didn't, not been over there for 35 odd years so ....
It was the first place I saw a Goshawk in the wild as well

Saw one last week It was my birthday (60th !) and daughter treated me to a visit to Chester Cathedral Falconry.

We were camping next to a wood on a farm a few years ago and at dusk one flew round for a couple of nights, I was impressed how silent they are. Very accurate representation there.

We had a tame barn owl at the mink farm I worked on, it flew around the feed house and rest room at its leisure.

That's there secret weapon the silient flight.
It is completely silent.
I've been to a good number of hawk displays and they fly the barn owl over the crowd as close to your heads as possible. It's impressive stuff cos he gets within mm's of ya but never makes contact and yes totally silent. Frightening if your a little mouse. You'll never hear it before it's too late.

I think I have held a barn owl on my arm once, a long time ago at the sheepdog trials at Hayfield. The otter sanctuary at Chapel en le Frith was always cool to see some owls there, too

Ha ha well afraid I have no idea where he is now, that was 35 years ago so I am unable to get a pic with the obligatory mug, will a female Sparrowhawk do?

I like @strada 's stuff best if I had to chose a style that is my favourite
His birds are unbelievably life like if they weren't shiny and metallic you'd think they were gonna pick up and take off.
