What is the towing power of an electric car?

Battery usage aside it makes diesel look poor and petrol not even in the same universe.

Fundamentally if you can get batteries with enough capacity electric vehicles will be far superior to diesel or petrol for towing. Massive torque for pulling and low down mass distribution for stability.

Finding a petrol station will be like finding a charging point at present.

Its all right the government knocking the motorist, but what are they going to do about large commercial and agricultural vehicles.

Emergency charging points on the hard shoulders of motorways to plug in the lorries that have flat batteries.

A national grid of recharging points in fields for the farmers, perhaps that's what solar farms are for?

I'm also looking forward to the hybred/rechargable military vehicles/tanks (portable charging points on the battlefield?), then theres all the navy's ships (again solar powered?)

The petrol chemical companies won't be able to produce petrol at a viable price because there's no outlets, so they will also will probably stop producing other fuels.

Aviation fuels, heating fuels, oils for lubrication.

Oh well, back to the dark ages.

..and that's [currently] the fundamental problem with them [batteries] ;capacity and mass.

There was a chap on the radio who reckoned a battery that could charge upto 90% in about 5 mins is on the horizon

You can charge current batteries in an hour - or less, far less.

But, energy.

It takes an amount of energy to shift a car.

Let's say it takes 10 hours to charge a pack from a 13A plug running at capacity - that's not beyond reason.

Now, charge that pack in an hour - you need (roughly) a 130A plug.

No probs, easy. Even do it in 30 minutes with 260A.

Why not double that again for the 120KW (500+A) tesla supercharger and be done in 15 minutes?

Brilliant eh?

Now, put a line of those in parking bays so everyone can charge in a fast and convenient manner - just how many car parks are within easy wiring distance of megawatt distribution?

Good point. Regardless of how good batteries get, you get out what you put in. Power will be like Broadband, you'll have a contention ratio. Mmmmm So thats why they want us to fit smart meters

I'm wondering which way prices of conventional cars would go in 2039. Would electric cars have improved so much nobody would want conventional cars anyway, or would prices rise because people wanted to hang on to them for the next 10 years? or would the whole thing be a white elephant by that time.

It's brilliant, everyone get battery cars.

There's no shortage of electricity, what with a good 95% of uk households being suitable for retrofitting of wind, wave and solar generation. And all of them have a driveway.

Or equip each house with a small gas CHP unit, if not each house then the local substations could generate electricity from gas and provide district heating on a small scale. Shouldn't be too difficult on all these new estates that are going to be built in the near future . New build should have solar roofs, cheaper than adding PV panels to existing roofs. There's an estate just north of Huddersfield with some house so equipped and they look very smart.
