Anybody repaired an Ipad screen/digitiser?

Accidentally kneeled on my Ipad mini last night & broke the screen/digitiser. Some of the repair shops round near me asking silly money to change the screen.
Various suppliers on the bay offering replacements at around £12-15 mark & plenty of videos on Youtube as to how to do it.
Can anybody offer any insights into firstly the quality of the replacement screens & secondly if anybody has carried out a replacement is it as straightforward as the videos would suggest?

haven't done an ipad, but done two android phones now, and it's really straightforward. the only thing is the micro torx screws that hold the screen to the phone, they were pretty well in, the first one I did I used the toy torx screw driver that came with it, made of cheese, would barely touch it, so bought a decent set from facom, paid more for the screwdriver than the screen but definitely easier got them out no other..

either way have a go, the way I looked at it, I had nothing to lose at that price, think I was 20 quid for the screen.

I've done quite a few iphones and a couple of sat navs, ipads can't be that different. Cheap screens are not brilliant they lack the contrast. If you can get away with just the digitiser it will be cheaper but it's fiddly. Just watched a Youtube and it's not much different just more screws

Ive looked into it, seems, relatively simple, reckon its worth spending a bit more and getting a decent screen.
We've two ipads with screens in different states of crackedness, when I do them, will change batteries, case and screen.
Ipad batteries only seem good for about 4 years.

Ipad screens are glued in, unlike the iPhones. You need to melt the adhesive all the way around, evenly to remove one. I have an intermittent power connector but can't face the job to replace it as it involves the same removal process.

The screen is made up of 2 parts, the touch screen and the display screen. To change either one you will need to remove the touch screen (this is at the top and usually the first to break) which will be destroyed in the process. You need a heat gun to warm the edges so to soften the adhesive tape then pull off gently but firmly. Careful around the buttons as there are fine ribbon cables. Also the antenna sits around the edge of the screen.

They are a pain but doable.

By the time the Xs is taken into consideration wouldnt be worth claiming. I've a 10k valuation on the gear in my garage, so if that ever gets broken into then it will be worth the time & effort involved filling out the claim forms.

I did one the other day after standing on my old iPad 4.

It depends entirely on how badly damaged it is. Lots of little cracks or smashed up sections are very difficult. The glue holds onto them like anything. Larger sections are much easier, the glue is time dependant and a long pull takes it off easily, a short sharp tug and it won't shift.

The cheapo digitisers seem to be ok, just be sure you get the right one with the correct buttons and whatever electronics may be attached to the button. Should have the glue strip already applied.

Also, there are two "screens" the clear capacitive touch screen (hopefully the only broken part) and the underlying video screen. You do not want to touch the video screen or drop any bits onto it as the broken screen comes off. Carefully run through the process in your mind first to ensure you don't end up marking that screen.

Mate did mine and he does loads of phones, said the iPad was a pain and he struggled. He did want me to fix his car in return so may have been making it sound worse
