Got my flypress.

Hi guys.
Finally got round to picking up my Norton 8 flypress...and what a weight that was to move...now...do any or you chaps have a fly press stand...i can make one but just thought I'd ask.

Not got a stand to offer but if you build one it will be worth sticking some drilled plate on the bottom so you can bolt it down, even on a heavy bench/stand they do like to try and move.

I have just this second put pen to paper and made a sketch of a suitable stand..with plates on the bottom to bolt it down...i have some 100x100x5mm box would be good for the legs. The press ways about 380 kgs acording to Google.

Definitely needs nailing to the floor, and if you put a solid top on it don't forget to put a hole in the middle so that if you use it for punching the blanks have somewhere to go,

Got give it a good clean up and a lick of paint ECT.. then I find a home for it In the shed...happy days

A motor factors a mate works in has a big old fly press. Still used for pressing aluminium car and bike number plates.

Nice, how big are your new balls? Add a couple of bolts from the frame into the wall where you stand the fly press to spread the load, used a couple where the frame twisted a little and absorbed some of the final whump. Diagonal bars to the wall stopped the stand twisting and reduced the effort needed.

The balls are 19kgs . Good point on the twisting .will build a substantial stand for it..

Not convinced a bench is the best way to go. Remember a lot of industrial machinery sits on concrete beds in commercial workshops.

What I find is you'll need a stupidly strong shelf underneath for all the stupidly heavy tooling you'll want to decorate it with. Hunton bolster, forming dies etc.

Two things catch out the unwary: the thing will spin, smack heads and trap fingers given half a chance. Always keep the handle secured or bottom out the top nut before letting go of the handle. Don't be fooled if it looks like it's going to stay up and wait for you to fiddle about with the tooling. It won't. It's just waiting to eat a finger.

Second thing I discovered. When you release the bending blades, they suddenly become heavier than you can hold with your spare hand. Almost at the same time, you realise you're now holding a blade which is dropping onto a solid cast iron chopping board. I now wind the tool down to the bed and lift the ram off of the retaining stub. Be careful out there!

I did do that once but it's only one of the many hazards. The weights are above my head height. Some of my taller friends risk having a cracked skull (cushioned or not...)

Also, it is so easy to put things behind which will be launched across the workshop next time you spin the handle. Not funny if its a DTI on your best Noga mag base...

The Mrs didn't say a lot about my press...i stood there with a big smile...she looked at me with a what ever look..but later on that evening I got a good reaction when I told her I got my eye on these

Yeah, from the back of the truck to the bench top on my own took more thinking than strength for sure
