Diamond cutting discs specifically for steel.

Any experience of these? I met a guy who uses a Milwaukee one- thin, not segmented. He said they last the equivalent of 100/150 conventional discs, and maintain their size of course more or less to the end of their diamond coating.

I used a diamond disc on everything from slate, plastic, concrete, steel. Made a mess of the bit you didn't want but that's all I had in that grinder for about 5 years

So have I, I used to use the slotted ones, not specified for steel but no problems for many years. I now use the 1mm cutting discs as they are so quick, easy and effective.

One on ebay called Tusk, 125mm for my angle grinder is £24-95, States that it will outlast 40 resin discs. ( with video demo)

There are many different diamond compounds, but generally they are not best suited to cutting steel without coolant. I was on a job this past week where they used some specific diamond wire to cut out some large steel beams. The diamonds were much larger and stood out off the beads much more than normal wire, and they still used a lot of water.

a lot of diamond disks including decent ones in stihlsaws cutting concrete aren't suitable for cutting reinforced with steel. they do cut it but don't last that long

The builders that did our extension last year used one in a Stihl saw to cut through the girder for the roof ridge, the Neanderthals!!

I just stood there tutting at them!

Life is certainly short, but judging by that 1st video clip it doesn't look to be significantly faster than the more commonly used 1mm discs.

Very tempted to try them myself, even if they only last half as long as they claim they'll work out at the same cost and there'd be big gains on not having to change disks and keeping the full size.

Much safer is a powerful argument- and if you're cutting biggish box sections conventional discs just don't stay large enough long enough. Milwaukee have a good rep, if I can find a supplier I'll pay up and hopefully look cheerful.

Ps: the 230mm ebay one is £50. If it outlasts more than even 25 discs I'd be sold.
