I took a couple of dozen pics in a German engineering museum today, it's a stunning gaff which noboby has heard of, just off the Holtenau Locks at the east end of the Kiel Canal.
I will post a couple of photos. Dont know if this is the correct section, happy to be advised. But a lot of folk on here would like it I reckon.

Have lot more pics, struggling with wifi connections. More to come..
Every single machine is in oily rag condition, on the button. Apart from the ones in the garden obviously.
Lots of cutaway educational diesels, the one in the first post is Junkers, the old boy went crazy when i said, hey it's a Junkers, they hold him like a god.
Same principle as Commer Knocker, Deltic, etc.

the most amazing thing out of many stunning exhibits was, to me, the cutaway, instructional motors, in particular the NSU Wankel rotary. As far as I could understand the old boy, it was used to explain how Wankel engines worked to all and sundry, but in particular, car mechanics etc. Things like this are incredibly rare, probably unique.

The grey machine with lots of brass gauges is a compressor. It is from a 1944 German U-boat. Submarines needs lots of squashed air, but they are short on space.
This is an axial flow turbine engine, directly connected to an in-line air compressor. It runs off diesel, vapourised in a burner/nozzle as far as I could understand.
They were given it in a sorry state, and restored it to perfect working order. Unbelievable! He said , when they flash it up, it is the loudest machine in the entire collection

and by the way, there is not a single SPECK of swarf in the whole premises

Ha ha Bricol, yes indeed.. I was being a bit flippant..

I did spend about six months on a big old ex DDR Rostock stern trawler, cant read German but know various sailor's obscenities . (plus a few welding-related terms etc)

Don't museums usually display old machinery? That mill looks newer than most of the stuff doing the rounds on eBay.

It's pretty obvious that Germany would have lost wwii, what's impressive is managing to last six consecutive years whilst being attacked by the rest of the world, being the first nation to successfully shift from propellor to jet propulsion as well as a swathe of other important discoveries (like cruise and intercontinental missiles). Humanity aside, it's something that has never been seen since and probably won't be again.

Kiel is lovely, we have family in Schleswig Holstein region, heading out Schleswig way. It was always a chance for me to pick up some Faller, Kibri, Vollmer gear for my model railway (another thing Germany is obsessed with, check out Miniatur Wunderland which is in Hamburg). Kiel had U-Boat pens, there is a museum there I believe. Lubeck was always a stop off too, got to have some Marzipan

Yes, Kiel is a nice place, spent a few days there before we transited through the Kiel canal and on to Bremerhaven, the Kiel canal itself is an impressive sight especially when you sail down it!

I've also spent some time in the MAN museum in Augsburg, they have some impressive WW2 kit there, including a U boat engine which was about big enough to live in.

And not forgetting that they didn't have a 4-engined heavy bomber. The bomb loads of the twin engine planes simply wasn't enough...

They were enough to destroy my uncle's street in Portsmouth, and kill his little sister. Since you mention it.

I didn't mean to start a conversation about war etc, will be more careful next time, the whole subject just wears me out.
