seems a few people were quite interested in my new job, so I'll put whatever bits and pieces I can on here for your viewing pleasure.

So first up is a meteor, this particular engine is destined for a car! As you can see it's running lovely!

I can only imagine quite large, I haven't seen it yet! There is a guy running one in a Rover SD1 though

How do you start something like that? Iirc some aero engines used small explosive charges?

Merlins and griffons are on a geared starter with a booster coil.

Quite a few old tractors, like field marshalls were cartridge start. 12g blank cartridge is used on those, may be a bigger cart on the bigger engines

I've never been a fan of high revving engines, give me a big lump that has great gobs of power at low revs any day.

As for cartridge starts wasn't there a scene in the original "Flight of the Phoenix" where he uses cartridges to start the engine or have I imagined it ?

Yes, I was going to mention it! I think there's a scene where they only have 2 or 3 carts left and it doesn't start till the last one and everyone's in suspense

Edit: it's called a Coffman starter, and apparently some merlins were fitted with them according to the wiki gods, I'll ask our boss about it on Monday

I think the characers had an argument because one chap wanted to use up a cartridge just to clear out the cylinders.
I was only young but on the edge of my seat!


Weren't the meteors made by rover and the merlin by rolls Royce? The aero engine being super charged and made of aluminium and the meteor NA but made of cast iron and used in tanks?

essentially yes, rolls royce swapped rover the meteor factory for their whittle jet factory in a nutshell.

Some of our engines have air start system. Compressed air is provided by HP engine driven compressor to 150 Bar and stored in bottles during running time. To start. the air is solenoid controlled to an engine driven distributor into each cylinder on the power stroke turning over the engine quickly. Fuelling is standard injection pump etc. Very effective. Can be used in conjunction with electric starter as well.

Our DG's on board ship used air start - paxman Valenta (not sure of spelling!) v12's. They sounded awesome when they were being run up!
