I used to wind them up before I retired, I used to keep on that I was going to B & Q, several started to believe it, I had the B & Q job application form as a screensaver as wellwish I was a gopher sometimes its less stressful . I might end up in b and q for minimum wage wearing an orange bib with my name put on it with a felt tip pen giving out duff information
PF A lot more academic than me.I've been lucky. I'm not overly academic, but was able to scrape a 3rd Class honours. I had a student apprenticeship with Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co Limited and at the time it seemed very hard work and tedious, but looking back it gave me a really solid grounding! I've had various breaks through the years particularly when I worked for London Underground when I got thrust onto a safety project and never looked back. I was able to advance quite quickly as many people didn't want the responsibility of having to sign something off as "safe" particularly when it was a main line railway or metro signalling system. The down side was a lot of moves around the country as these jobs are few and far between (they were anyway). Yes, I am very senior these days, I'm also very active in my Institution (The Institution of Engineering and Technology) but I feel I'm giving something back. I interview candidates for professional registration (CEng and IEng) but I also mentor the younger engineers in WSP to pass on my knowledge (as I see that is not well done these days) and also give them the best chance when they apply to become a professional engineer as I know what the interviewers are looking for!
