When I re-wired my parents house (built in 1900), I tore out the old fuse box, and
I put in all new.
These are getting popular, and it puts the main switch/breaker just as close as you can to the meter. Plus, you just attach the wires coming in, rest is pre-wired buss bars with snap in breakers.
I hired a master electrician, and we cut the main wires at 8:00 am, and were back on by 2:00 pm.
