you only make that sort of stuff when u are 1st starting out or skint after a few years u only make things that are interesting or cost a lot of money to buy and u can knock one up and get satisfaction that u have made itYou can buy a threaded myford backplate for around £25.00, why buy a tap? I know its nice to do the job from start to finish, but why chance messing it up.
If your having to pay £100.00+ for a plate, go for it.

Very often I make things on my lathe I could buy for next to nothing and have shipped next day.but is it really cheaper to start from scratch, then theres your time to be taken into account as well.
