I'll cut this short (ish)... In November 16 I bought a used BMW330D by private sale. It had 41K on it with full service history and has warranty until June 17 - not long now!
The week before I bought it the owner had new front brake discs fitted by BMW at a cost of £349.00
As I drove the car more and more I noticed a pulsing in the brake pedal…..not the steering though. This got worse and worse so I went over to my local BMW main dealer in Liverpool.
They looked at my paperwork and noticed the pads had not been changed with the discs…...although they had been changed 10K before. They said they would not look at the problem under warranty unless the pads were changed again. They quoted me £165.00 an hour plus the parts. I agreed to change the pads myself so paid £170 for a set of genuine front pads and a new wear sensor
As I changed the pads I checked the disc run-out with a dial gauge…..the offside read OK at around 0.1mm but the nearside was reading almost 1.5mm.
I took the disc off and found both the disc and the hub were badly rusted – they were changed three months ago so whoever did the job did not clean the hub and I am presuming that water has got in since through the gap and caused the inside of the disc to rust.
I thought this would cure the problem…but no unfortunately.
The brake pedal pulsing is still there but it’s intermittent. I can drive for half an hour without a problem but then the pulsing comes in and can be really bad – it doesn’t seem to matter whether I’m driving fast or slow but it’s quite violent and can be felt by the passenger.
Now I’ve just come in from an hours drive and it didn’t happen at all. I’ve stuck an OBD reader on and no faults.
It’s now booked in to BMW on Thursday for them to check it out…but…
The service manage says “BMW will not pay for diagnostics” and “they will only take it for a short test drive” so..if nothing is found I’m going to end up paying for them to tell me there’s nothing wrong.
Can anyone advise me as to what may be causing this pulsing..could the discs have been damaged by the misfitting and could this show up intermittently..I’m at a loss. What should the run-out on new discs be??
Pics below..the new runout figure should read 0.1mm not 0.01mm and I think it was slightly more than 0.1 anyway.
