This reminded me of my old roof by a cheapskate, all done in 3x2. Quite scary what some cowboys leave behind.
Your doing the right thing tackeling it rather than hiding from it, like many would.
I replaced the roof now supported by steel. And getting big steels in is a nightmare even with things like tele-handlers. The mains in the floor are actually two u channels welded back to back, to avoid the need for a crane.
Not sure its right but the 3 joists bolted together will be much easier to get in and far stronger than what you had.
