Hello all, i've had a lot of problems with my welder today and thought i'd google my problems, and found this place! There seems to be a wealth of knowledge so I hope someone can shed some light on my problem...
I have a SIP Migmate 130 turbo, I am using 0.8mm steel wire with gas (I converted it to a large pub gas bottle, disposables cost me too much in the end). I am welding some steel channel for a boat trailer I am building, I have had to do some welds around 6" long at full power. I did one without any problem, then during the second one it started sputtering and coughing, from then on eveytime I tried to adjust wire speed it would work fine for a second then start to sputter again. It would either seem like wire speed was too high (sputters) or too low (fused to the tip) irrelevant of whether i'd adjusted the speed control. I have:
The fact that it works briefly afer playing with it made me wonder if in fact it is heat related and it cools while i'm fiddling enough to allow a few more seconds of good weld. I also wonder if the heat / load affects wire speed, especially as i've read on here that the speed control on this unit is awful, this would explain why I can sometimes get the weld going properly again by fiddling with the speed dial. It does sort of feel as though it just 'runs out of juice' when I can't stop the stuttering, as though there is not enough power to keep it going in a smooth motion and I have to give up.
So what's the view? Fine welds - but not for very long! New welder? A good one with better duty cycle?

- Changed the liner
- Change the tip
- Played endlessley with wire tension
- Been skewered in the thumb by the wire when it missed feeding into the liner
- Had the 'thermal overload' come on once
