I have had a large propane bottle in the back garden since the Spring. I opened the valve fully, and left it for a few moths till the weather warmed up. Since then i have opened and closed it every week, and it still spurts out gas for a couple of seconds before stopping. This has been going on for over 6 months and theres no sign of bottle emptying. Im a bit paranoid about just drilling a hole in it (obviously)
I just cannot seem to get a decent spanner purchase on the nut to get the tap out. It is one of those with the carrying handles so I cant get a spanner it except for the front a little like this one pictured here. Except the space to get a spanner in is not as wide as that. If you can see the 'Calor' written on the bottle, the space on mine is approx from where the 'A' starts to where the 'O' ends. I cant even get a quarter turn on it. I wanted to keep the carring handle but it looks as if it'll have to go. U nless someone here has any ideas ?
Isn't that handle bolted on, I usually ratchet strap the cylinder to the leg of the bench, then shift it with a big stillson, if its empty the bit of residual pressure is probably down to temperature change just leave it open, (outside)
then fill it with water when the valves out.
Stick a drift through the hole in the handle and whack it against the valve with a hammer to slacken it off then it will turn with a spanner or adjustable. It always works for me anyway. Lie the cylinder on it's side and sit on it to stop it moving too far.
The carrying handle for mine was welded on, or that would've been the first thing to come off. Anywho, I Finally got it off this morning! I went to Machine Mart yesterday and got a set of Stilsons (do people still call them Stilsons?) Couldnt just get the biggest ones as they had to both get a grip of the gas tap/nut and at the same time fit inside the carrying handle, along with the bar I was using to wedge it from moving whilst I was trying to turn it. Just as I'd thought, after I'd got the first inch of a turn on it (incrementally approx 2mm every 20 minutes) it came loose enough to turn by hand.
Glad I re read the above posts and saw the one about cutting 3 sides of a door then welding on the hinge and only then cutting the last side. Good idea that.
What I need to know now is this. I am aware that glass from oven doors will work, but what about fireproof pyrex dishes?
Also, whats this about putting air vent pipes inside to get a hotter burn?. Dont know anyhting about that. Could someone please Gen me up, or point me a link to somewhere its discussed.
If you're going to bang the valve off use a non ferrous tool to prevent sparks! Either a brass drift or a solid length of wood. Once it's off, turn it upside down and let out any liquid being careful not to let it get on your clothing, boots, etc. You have to do this outside. Once the valve is off and the cylinder is drained, fill it up with water and drain that out.
Gas cylinders are dangerous even or especially when opened. A small volume of gas in an enclosed cylinder is also a very effective bomb...
Managed to cut it in half this affternoon with the 5 inch grinder. I tried the 9 inch, but it seemed too sort of all over the place, almost bouncing, so I went back to the small whizzer and those snazzy 1mm metal cutting discs.
In the opinion of the experienced gas bottle/woodburner experts on this forum. Which one of these two beauties will make the best wood burner (where best = easiest and quickest)?
(By 'two beauties' I mean the two halves of the propane bottle, not me and the Ford Fiesta !
PS: look at me, all safety first with my steel toed boots, leather apron, ear defenders, flame proof jacket. Shame i'd taken off the goggles and gauntlets before pic was taken.
safest way i find to empty the bottle would be to open the valve and leave upside down for a few days turn right way up and using a cordless dril or even baeter a bit and brace drill 2 holes under running water turn upside down again for a few days turn upright again and using a funnel fill with water put a bloww torch to the holes should not get anything but if thetre is it wont do anything then get medievile with the 4 1/2 grinder
Hi all. I'm new to this i'm VERY WORRIED about blowing my self up but would love to make my shed nice and warm.I have no sound on my computer, so cant hear what the blokes saying in the link.So i dont want to get it wrong and as my wife says it only takes a stupid mistake and she will have to get the shovel out. All advice needed please
Vic> If you fill a bottle with water then it can't contain any gas hence it is empty.
when you empty the water you replace it with the air that you breathe which isn't all that flammable is it ?
The smell is an aromatic that they add to gas so you can smell leaks, still being able to smell aromatic doesn't mean there is still gas present.
If you were totally and utterly paranoid then fill it with dry sand before cutting............
