Squeezed in a couple hours this evening, more cleaning, wire wheeling, and sanding
Got the 3 speed gearbox in the washer, removing 50 years of grease is not fun, I'd rather clean a CV joint!
Then dismantled and detail clean and inspect....
Gears are mint though and bearings which is nice
Casing got a going over with a flap disc to smooth it out, can't be areas filling etc, ran out of etch primer so did my usual and painted straight to metal, which I find is fine with enamel
Also got some paint in the top slide bits
Just got this last bugger to clean down and check over, then it's all back together,
oh and the change wheel cover, which is in good nick so a light sand and paint will suffice

That's something I'm all too familiar with.
Collecting old/antique machinery does have some caveats. You seem to be making a damn fine job of that.
I've never had any problem with enamel on bare metal either. It's my preferred method these days.

Had permission for some workshop time!
Nearly got Harry back together, high as a kite on petrol fumes cleaning the carriage I finally got it painted and on, lots of faffing about getting it in place. But not a lot to show for 6 hours, but progress is progress. need To get a new topslide nut as Harry's i managed to screw up, or try and salvage the original which hopefully I can manage as the lathe is hardly worn. The cross slide is silky smooth now all is cleaned and lightly oiled with only slight backlash which I can sort with adjustment.
Need to fab up a better splash guard so all swarf goes into suds tray, got some aluminium sheet that should do the job.

Got the splash back made, but and bolted with stainless cap heads that I had lying around.
Moved it back to its resting place to pretend to make something haha

Been Having a few issues with getting Harry together.
Decided to have a crack at making my own topslide nut as its one is ********.
Got quite far, now onto the last leg of actually cutting the 2mm ACME.

I know i know, my inexperience shine s through doesnt it haha.
Ive got enough bar to make 2 more if i do hash it up.
The offending nut
Managed to lock the topslide with the gib adjusters to allow machining, oh also installed a quick change toolpost, had to machine the post shaft too.
Nut as it stands drilled an ready for threading, i found centre point on the mill and pilot drilld it through with a 6mm bit then centred in the four jaw with a 6mm blank in the nut and tailstock chuck, just need to suss out changewheels needed

And cut a tool for the ACME which yet I don't know if 29degree or 30degree.
I had a go with some old tool steel, got close and then went too far!!! got plenty more hss to play with
In pretty certain too that the leadscrew is 4 tpi so it is definately an original machine with factory metric conversion on the saddle gear. The manual copy I got from eBay suggested the same with the parts lists available at th time.
Good job i got hold of a 127t gear.
