I wonder if that's shot then.....There should be a condenser. It provides the current path for the collapsing magnetic field when the points open, which gives you the spark.

Ok apparently the condenser is part of the coil in the later ones.the condensor sometimes looks like the fixed part of the contacts
Well it seems like it is. I will double check tommorow. Is it the correct plug for your particular engine? No egg-sucking being taught here, but plugs have different reaches and operating temp ranges.
Worth checking I thought.
its got the Ricardo shape head too ,thats the shape all early sidevalve tuners copyHi,
That's where I 'borrowed' the search string from, I think.
I've taken the head off the engine and cleaned up with degreaser and fine wet and dry...

The carb had a small amount of rust at the bottom of the float chamber so I cleaned that up the same way. Externally I've cleaned everything with a paint brush and degreaser.
If I get chance on the way home this afternoon I'll call into the lawnmower repair shop with the carb and see if he's got a new throttle cable and some springs. I'm planning to drain the engine oil tonight and flush out, the engine tipped over on the bench, dropped some oil and there's either water or fuel floating in it.
Hopefully my son will supply some petrol soon, next time he fills his car he's going to squirt a pint into a can for me. We're all running diesels at home!
Regards
Peter
thats true and some of these engines you have to grind the valve stem to get clearance after re lapping seatsIf the valves are leaking will that cause the pooofs.
I think it might be valves. Just need to search you tube for how to split the engine to remove and lap valves then how to measure clearances.I ended up fitting an external condensor, that perked the spark up no end.
Also stripping and cleaning the carb. I noteiced with my thumb over the plug hole there didn't fell like there was much compresstion so I lapped the valves and and checked the clearances. After that it runs sweetly.
It seems to cut both sides but not in the middle.
Or the bottom blade is bent from having a stick/stone caught at some point.
