- I have worn glasses since 1964.
- I put them on when I get up, take them off when I go to bed (or have shower).
- I have an annual eye test, but my distance correction hasn't changed in over 30 years.
- I keep an emergency spare pair in the car.
- My licence has the glasses endorsement because I declared I wear them.
- I avoid driving at night on unlit rural roads.
YET - I can read a clean modern number plate in decent light at 25 metres, so would 'pass' a driver's eye test with ease.
My late mother voluntarily gave up driving in her early 80s because she decided she should.
It is more about driver's attitude than readily measurably capabilities under test conditions.
Having said that a regular eye test at the optician of your choosing is a low cost and simply administered way of getting some of the more extremely incapable drivers off the road - or at least provide a record of their incapacity.
If most drivers are like the ones I know it won't be 'old folks' causing problems due to poor eyesight - it will be younger vain females who need glasses but decline to wear them.
But it's attitude again - take the eye test, get your specs and leave them in the glove compartment, until after you have a collision.
