Does this mean using hydraulic fluid as cutting fluid?converting all my machines once out of the packing crates to run on Hydraulic fluid....
I have an as new Myford S7 and a Myford VMF mill..both with shipping wax still on em.....
water is not getting near them 2.......
Soluble cutting oil has a corrosion inhibitor, and it cools and lubricates when cutting. I don't see how hydraulic oil would provide sufficient cooling.converting all my machines once out of the packing crates to run on Hydraulic fluid....

It is a cross up betweenSoluble cutting oil has a corrosion inhibitor, and it cools and lubricates when cutting. I don't see how hydraulic oil would provide sufficient cooling.
That is what I use. I tend to run the mixture a bit rich. Just use it in a squirty bottle for machines without a pump. Great for my mag drill as well.Smith & Allen soluble cutting oil is very cheap when diluted to the correct mix. And it doesn't rust tools. That's what I use on machines.
Tried using some hydraulic oil instead of soluble cutting oil on the mill yesterday evening. Clouds of smoke. Chips not cleared. I know which one I prefer. I suppose if the oil was being pumped it would be different but I'm not a Texan oil well owner. That is why I use oil, I rarely use it, no smell, no need to change it really for me, it lubricates the machine with over spray,
When using oil, you can't use the same SFM.Tried using some hydraulic oil instead of soluble cutting oil on the mill yesterday evening. Clouds of smoke. Chips not cleared. I know which one I prefer. I suppose if the oil was being pumped it would be different but I'm not a Texan oil well owner.
Surface Feet per MinuteMy oil is via the suds pump, do u just manually apply yours?
What is SFM?
I can fill the shop with smoke too if I wish! But I try not too
ah man typical yank! well say smm! probably! lolSurface Feet per Minute
I apply mine with both a hand pump oiler, and some machines have a proper sump, pump and hose.
And that's why I wouldn't use neat oil when machining. There's a difference between cutting oil and hydraulic oil, they're not interchangeable. Neat oil doesn't have nearly the cooling capacity of soluble oil either, it's great where you need lubrication, like drilling or tapping, but if you're taking lots of material off, suds will cool better and wash the chips away more effectively.
Used to have tallow for use with dead centres, not cutting as such but it used to have a unique “aroma” when it got hot!Anyone tried lard oil?
