You needs stainless steel solder and flux don't you ?
The regulators are so cheap now that the last one I replaced ( Lucas A127 ) wasn't worth buying the special flux to do it.

wont it be the cv joint that goes into the wheel hub? does if feel rough when you move it or any play, should be really smooth, and you can buy the joint separately,
If it was a cv joint wouldn't it be really bad at full lock??
you said it was making a noise on turning? they can also cause wheel vibration if worn.
what is the problem with the shocks ? if the bushes in the strut body/ rods are worn, the strut takes the torque reaction of the drive, IE as you turn the wheel road wheel forward the strut wants to move and can clunk. They did advise me i needed new front shocks but i don't think thats causing the problem.
Check anti roll bar drop links, and anti roll bar bushes , is it worse on uneven roads?

went to agarage last week that had fitted new springs to an astra, since then they have had a clunk, they have since replace everything bar the struts, I listened to it and if you put your fingers on the top mounts you could feel a clunk, but they are new they cried, yes but when you used a nut gun to undo the strut tops they have spun and you have undone the thread at the bottom of the piston rod and that is what is moving and clunking.
,
The top mounts fill with water and rust and damage the bearings. They said they were leaking a bit and something about the top mount
anti roll bar out then. With clutch depressed free wheeling down a hill a constant thud thud thud.
