Anyone with any marking out skills would never work off the last centre, always from a fixed datum where possible so like as you said any errors wouldn't be magnified. On some jobs that i've done on the bed plate there has been many hundreds of holes all to within a couple of thou tolerance.frankly not picking up off the last centre you couldn't 1/4 mm x 4 is a full MM that's what I mean by conspiring tolerances. I think there was 348 holes in the top
the computer uses a single datum point for them all. no way can you better it, thing is you need the plate supplied and cut to size and squared up anyhow. I often use the holes to eye things up to square setting out. if you want them to just hold clamps sure drill them as the pitch being off or the square don't matter but your going to be on it a very long time drilling holes. on the laser bed it will be done inside an hour. consider how much time is in drilling and marking all those holes then phone a lasercutting place for supplying the squared up 10 mm plate ready cut and holed
Now this isn't a whatsaname measuring contest , I'm just stating that it can and is done with great precision, In saying that for the application i would probably do the same as you have and have them cut.
