Zinc Coated Parts

I have had some threaded inserts arrive with what appears to be a zinc coating. Welding on this destroys the tungsten in a matter of seconds

Is there an easy way of removing the coating or is it a matter of grinding it all off?

Even the threads are coated and once welded I need to re-tap them.

Fortunately I dont have to use many of them so its not a long term problem.

If it is zinc then dilute hydrochloric acid should shift it.

More likely passive coated zinc. Grinder or as RTB says

For zinc removal get some brick and mortar cleaner, its about 20% hydrochloric acid. Like rtbcomp says that will shift it. Do it outside it produces hydrogen gas, its nasty stuff.
