The argument about driving faster makes you concentrate more is utter rubbish. I'm 46, hold a full car, full motorcycle and class 1 HGV, my licence is clean and always has been - I don't knowingly break the speed limits but am still alive. Complete concentration is required on the roads no matter what speed you are doing, and if you are not capable of holding that concentration then perhaps you should consider a different means of transport.

No offence taken or meant, but sounds as if you have taken that statement from a text book was stating an observation about driving slower you are not telling me you have never thought whats for tea driving at 40/50 mph driving at 70+ you have no time for that thats my point.
I am not far behind you on age have the bike and car licence maybe I should go for the HGV then the 50mph would suit.
I am still here so the driving slow or not breaking speed limits does not wear dont have a clean licence but dont agree with the speeding ticket either 7 mph over the limit on a 1 mile straight stretch (tell me that was not a revenue money maker) as for the ex-racer I have set lap and race records at both my local race circuts recieved the best necomer trophy at the TT so suppose I have a wee bit experience at driving at speed.Would defenately not ride a push bike too many trucks on the road takes a bit of going passing them especially with a welder strapped to my back. p.s. have had one bump in my pickup in 20 years holding a full car licence (28 years full bike licence)and he drove into me.

I got a bollocking the other day for getting orange juice all down my shirt.

I told her it would never have happened normally but driving down the M1 I had to swerve to avoid a slow car, the orange I was peeling slipped and stained the shirt when I tried to catch my map which was about to land in my cup of coffee.

Mind you, I wouldnt have been peeling the orange if there had been anything in the Papers.

I agree, Sam that a lot of the speed restrictions are just to increase revenue. The speed cameras on the A361 are on perfectly straight roads with no accident history (at that point) and are located on a down slope where you could easily exceed the limit accidentally.
Didn't mean to sound like a text book, but my point was that I am more likely to have my mind wander at 70 on a motorway than at 50 on a rural twisty road. I probably didn't explain myself very well.

But I still have to support anything which will make the roads around here safer, until a better solution comes along.

Only looking for friendly banter getting bored watching Lightning McQueen with the kids. We have the same problem here with cameras on non blackspot accident areas. They do drive fast here in the borders but we have a few world and British champions from here may be something in that. Jim Clark, Jock Taylor, Steve Hislop, Jimmy Guthrie, Andrew Cowan, Louise Aitken-Walker to name a few.

agree they should, but not non taxed, after all everyone doesnt want to pay tax in one form or another, can you hand on heart stand up and say i have never in my life avoided duty on anything, i dont think so
Problem is for so many years now new labour have eroded our freedoms and constantly bring in legislation to restrict everything you do, as usual this proposal is just the thin end of the wedge. and nothing more at this stage than a revenue raiser, a lot of us need our licence for work etc, so what i propose is everyone with a driving lisence speeds 5 times past a camera now the government gets £300 but you lose yer job n need to sign on. this will cost government more than they could collect and the country will grind to a halt as most people wont be working so taxes arnt collected, see how long gatsos and other types of camera will last then,a lot of stuff is just revenue raising take SORN as an example, it has to be declared on all vehicles that are untaxed and off road, now the filth have a line into dvla computers so an anpr check will tell if the vehicle should be on the road, so by that token SORN is nothing more than a revenue raiser as if you forget to redo it tis an £80 fine. average speed cameras, lets look at those your driving a red car and decide to take a 10 minute break, 3 minutes up the road a post office gets robbed, you then rejoin the road covered by cameras, so you could be blamed for the robbery as all the evidence points to it being you ( not as far fetched as it seems )

The answer is driver education or like in the old days a swift smack in the mouth from the copper who caught you

Seems fair to me - folk who look after the roads should have the power to alter the speed limits. They'll know where people keep crashing. Lower speed limits on short stretches do give the message that there's something to watch out for.

Downside of course is the danger of conditioning people to think they can drive at the speed limit along a road and not have to slow down for corners and things, or if it's wet, or if a tractor has been out, or if there's a junction.

If Clementine the cat was in power (in an Archie coalition government) the guidance would be to use the powers sparingly.

It does seem a fair response. The only thing I think is at question may be the general proposal to "make Britains roads the safest in the world". Now I'm not suggesting that we should court danger for the sake of it, but to my mind, if the roads were "the most efficient in the world", then safety would be just one factor which would contribute to maximising efficiency and average speed.

Efficiency is a good point.

There was a tunnel fire that killed a number of people some time ago, and it was clear that building a second tunnel for traffic going the other way would have reduced the casualties enormously.

It does come down to where you spend the money. Some wag suggested building two new hospitals positioned at each end of the tunnel would on average save more lives in the area. And it would would have been cheaper.

They ought to ask on here before proposing these new ideas.

Hi All,

I've just been catching up on this thread, anyone tried driving in Oxford recently? Most if not all through routes solid with traffic and all others now blanket 20MPH. Any Authority that nibbles piecemeal with the problems of traffic and driving will loose the respect of drivers in general, result? chaos.

Problems with traffic and speed are, IMO, due to lack of driver training. Very few drivers are taught to drive, most novice drivers are taught to pass a test and get no further training, how many go for IAM?

Sorry rant over, having been in training I have seen where the problems are.

I would be for less speed if it saved lives government don't introduce speed limits to save lives they introduce it increase revenue if they were interested in saving lives they wouldn't allow cars with a top speed above the maximum speed level to be sold most cars now have built in sat nav systems it's not beyond the bounds of technology for a sat-nav to warned you with a beeper if you were over the speed limit
