Mate sent me this today. He was putting a shelf over a radiator and pierced a heating pipe. Are they allowed to put pipework where they like in new build houses ?


Is the foil behind the pipes a rudimentary insulation or is it so you can detect them ?

I’d never have a new build but he never seems to learn, on his 4th and endless problems with every one

the foil is put behind to detect them as they could be anywhere in the walls at any angle .no set pattern . its not 2 bad if you pierce one on a sealed heating system as it soon stops once the pressure drops and vacuums vented is a real bummer and floods the place till the tank empties after turned off

He claims his detector goes haywire all over the house. Ive told him to crack out the divining rods next time

Teach him how to turn down the sensitivity?

I once drilled through a partition wall, on a boat, red atf oil started pouring out, I'd drilled through the steering hydraulic pipes.

Oops.

no one asked what the thousand to one rule is i say it to customers when they ask if i have one of them thingies for finding them . yep s drill; and a chisel for every thousand holes you drill one will go though a cable or pipe

yep i was on job once drilled through a gas pipe bearing in mind no gas points anywhere nearby was literally just under plaster surface in middle of wall . turned out customer did it themselves

People use that rule when driving around corners too fast on the roads. Most of the time there won't be someone coming the other way.

Wondered why I was having difficulty putting a screw in a mates upstairs floor, thought maybe the old wood is just so dry, extra push on the battery screwdriver and the screw went straight through a copper pipe underneath the floor, what a bullseye it was, centre of pipe and out the other side, I couldn't have done that if I tried.

I put a screw through an upstairs underfloor heating pipe a few years ago.

The most annoying thing was I knew the pipe was there, and I'd even marked up the floorboard with a thick red pen and written "Pipes under here" in big red letters right above them. So god only knows why I ignored all that and smashed a screw right through the middle of my "Pipes under here" warning to myself.

When I worked for a builders merchant, my boss moved into another house, the upstairs floorboards squeaked on the landing. He nailed them all down with a nail in the centre of the boards, made a lovely job of it, straight through the heating pipe on every joist. We asked “didn’t you realise the reason they squeaked, they had been up before” “no didn’t think of it” “don’t nail in the centre of the board, the could be pipes under it” “oh” you would have thought that the boss would have been aware of all of this, but no!
