Xt30 xt60 xt90 connectors in full size vehicles

I'm struggling to find a definitive to this, because every search throws up answers for RC vehicles:

Im setting up a couple of auxiliary power connectors in my LC.
I'm toying with the idea of using XT60 connectors, rather than the usual "cigarette lighter" style.
Are these connectors suitable for use inside (full size) off road vehicles?
I'll be using Anderson connectors for an external connector - these are just for internal use.

If you match the current rating then sure

Yes.
Providing it meets the current carrying requirements, voltage, ip rating (if relevant) and the number of dis/connect cycles expected you can use any connector you like.

One advantage of the cigarette lighter style is that the socket can be panel mounted and usually has a cover on it.
You can also get a better version that twists to lock but is still compatible with the original style plugs.
A lot of car accessories come with a cigarette type plug (so matching sockets would save you changing the plugs over) and some things like usb adapters have the cigarette plug moulded into them so can't be changed.

I'd use cigarette sockets for power outlets that I was actually using.
For connectors that will only be used for isolation/mantainance anything to suit.
I don't know what the Xt connectors are like but I'd like something with a locking clip or the ability to lock the 2 halves with a cable tie as there can be a lot of vibration in a vehicle but I'd guess the Xt are ok with that if used in radio control cars?

Used them in the kit... OK but can quite easily pull out... I am not pulling anything near max current on them but if you are guess this would be a problem

guess for the same amp rating they might be bigger... but I'd trust them more too, less likely to drop out of vibrate etc.

Xt60 are rated for 60A continuous, 120A peak.
Since a "normal" cigarette socket is rated at 15A, I doubt it'll be a problem.


I'm got a fridge + a CB that I want to install intermittently - plugged/unplugged maybe 6-10 times a year.
Cigarette lighters stick out 3-4inches, whereas an xt60 is only about 1" long, less if I 3D print a 90° connector.

As an example.
If I plug a cigarette lighter plug in the right hand socket, it interferes with the gear lever(s)

You can get small anderson connectors but they are a pain to terminate if you are using undersized cable.
You can get smaller lugs for the andersons but they are a pain to source.

90⁰ cigarette lighter plugs are readily available in both normal and locking versions though..

Theres also the minor* issue that cigarette plugs are £3 each, at least, whereas I have dozens of XT?0 connectors already.


*As a Yorkshireman, it's not a "minor" issue.
