Wrought iron repair

Gate came in a few months ago,with some serious corrosion and breaks,also required the top hinge moved,here’s some details.i think the cause of the bottom pivot damage was a result of being buried in soil.

A new tenon pin was fitted,cheated by welded in place,then peeled over,there’s been a hook fitted to hold the intermediate rail,guess the old tenon joint failed.

Now the joint of the bottom pin to stile has separated ,so I’ll have to cut the excess off the bottom rail,which will allow the scroll to re join,I cant jerk it in over the rail as that will put it out of square,this must have been buried to rot like that.
Not surprised at the wear on the latch,gate comes from a house which was a pub....100 years ago.

Slightly off topic, but if you were making that gate from new how would You measure and drill / punch the holes on that semi circular pice of flat bar in the bottom half?

Lay the bar onto position,Mark with a square directly above,so tail of the square just touches the bars below,then tack wedge shape drill jig bushings(blind holes),onto the curved bar to be drilled,all done on a rigid pillar drill,not a China effort,lol,
I’ve also done holes on a much less steep bar ,by pre drilling ,then reaming,either by hand or machine.
I’ve always wondered how they were done in a productive environment,maybe a selection of oval punches with sleeves to support the punch as it strokes thru,must’ve been factories in the Black Country knocking them out by the thousands.
