Lol No, I dont weld stick unless I can avoid it.
I welded a quick T fillet and lap earlier and it welded fine so I think there maybe a lot of contamination on the steel and as you say the toxic cup probably is a bit of a waste on a corner fillet. So at least the gas is fine. I'm not trying to get colours out of the stainless, it just sort of happened. At college I usedto over heat the stainless and get the horrible grey mess so I decided to break the habit and the colours appeared.
The toxic cup has 3 diffusers in it, the main gas lense and 2 secondary diffusers over the cup mouth.....there half the length of a standard lense which is why I left it on.
Like I say I'm not a pro, just stick with what works
