wrench for bearing retainer removal

Need a wrench to take this retainer out

It's in tight and the housing is not robust

worried that if I bashing it anymore with a punch or chisel the notches will deform and it will be fecked

What is this type of wrench called?

The peg spanners I have seen have pins and probably would not get much purchase

Maybe grind a gash socket to fit

Don't have any gash sockets though

I would castleate the end of a bit of tube with a grinder and use a pair of grips. Only need the two bits sticking up.

Without rushing into the garage would guess the slots are 3mm x 6mm

Judging by the picture you'd need some nice square pegs locating on as much of the slot as possible since it seems to be quite shallow.

@weldingnovice can you notch the end of a bit of flat bar and either turn it with an adjustable or bend the legs over to get it round that shaft?

Not made by me. I think they might be skf. Used for taking internal bearing retaining rings out and that kind of thing.

Best way to make a tool is to take pipe of approx correct diameter with nice square end. Then instead of trying to cut castellations, cut two notches (approx 1mm deep) so you can weld a piece of square 3mmx3mm bar across and then cut off the central section of bar to leave the two protruding keys.

You need the tube to contact the retainer as this will ensure everything stays square and prevent the keys camming out
