Wow, somebody really wanted this straight edge!

This 24" Crown Windley cast iron straight edge came up on eBay. I would have bid on it early on but I already have an identical one the same size. Glad I didn't need it because I wouldn't have paid the price anyway. It's not even in that good a condition. It's gonna need a bit of work on that face to make it useful.

They're for when you get an A4 pad that doesn't have lines in it.

Serious answer:

Lot's of different Metrology tasks but mainly they are for checking the flatness of serfaces such as the ways on a metalworking machine.
This allows surfaces to be scrapped in to true flatness.

I use mine for scraping and alignment, along with some granite surface plates and some other small straight edges I made.

Yes indeed I drove to Kings Lynn to collect the big four footer and it was like new. As MattH said they are very thin on the ground.

Ive a piece of milled aluminium extrusion that would be hard to beat for the straightness most of us use...easily got from skips of companys making bi-folding doors ect

A guy I know has two six footers. Trouble is, he's a hoarder, he'd never part with them, even though he's never ever going to use them, but they might come in useful. Though oddly enough, in all the hospital dramas I've ever seen, I never saw the surgeon call for a straight edge....

A 6 foot straight edge is about all I can do to carry on my own. Takes 2 people to actually use one. Also very easy to damage the edges.
