I volunteer on a heritage railway and they use 11tpi taps on several different diameters on steam boilers, where does that come from?

I feel your pain. I'm rebuilding a machine that uses Whitworth fasteners almost exclusively - some of them left hand!

Today I'm making Whitworth fasteners

@Pete. A supplier local to me still stocks whitworth fastners, not sure a bout left hand thread but he holds them in stock right up to 2"

I couldn't tell you why, but BSP threads above 1" are (all?) 11 tpi. What sizes do you use?

Cheers Brad but the LH nut turned out to be UNF. I ended up making one.

- u can get most imperial nuts and -bolts easily if u want to pay the price .-in stainless steel though

Stainless just looks so wrong on most old kit though. I have some 1/4" BSW bolts here that I must have had twenty years or so, and I've still only used a handful or so of them in all that time. Self coloured or brass are usually far better for older kit.

1/2 UNF LH nut , I made a spare and a pin spanner to turn them.
