Worx battery

I have 2 batteries for my worx hammer drill, 1 is no longer taking a charge and the other is not holding a charge for very long. the batteries are 14.4 volts 1.7Ah, I have looked for replacement on the web, but cannot find any compatible and I don't want to throw the drill out as it is a good one, is there anything that can be done to these batteries to bring them back to life or do I have to look for new ones?

Can you take the battery cases apart and replace the cells - maybe sourced from e-bay?

When my 14v drill batteries packed up I removed them and fitted long leads with croc-clips so I could run it off a car battery. I but a big blocking diode in the circuit to protect the electronics.

Yes there is screws.
Just taken the screws out and there are 12 Ni-Cd cells in it. Can I buy these? and are they likely to be more expensive than a new drill?

there will only be 1 or 2 busted cells in your pack and you will find them with a multimeter

They should be standard cells C size at a guess. If they are solder tag ones you'll either need to source tagged cells or make good the contacts to the ordinary cells. Whatever you do DO NOT solder ordinary cells, they are liable to explode or the internal seals will rupture making then useless and the solder wont stick to the plating.

The individual cells should have their capacity on them 1800mAh at a guess, may be on the case of the pack. Ni-MH will be better than Ni-Cd as the memory of the cells is less.

pop them all in series and you'll get 14.4 V

There's nothing that clever in these packs just the shell to fit the relevant drill/charger

tested all of the cells and only 4 seem to have any life in them that means I would have to replace 8, looking at maplin that's £5 a pop
Had a look on screw fix and found this looks identical to the battery that I have, I wonder if the guys at my local screw fix would let me try one on my drill would save a bit of cash if it fitted and the hassle of getting new individual cells.

They are normally sub c cells, i was looking at doing my makita 9.6v, they are a tad smaller than normal c cells.

Yes, the cells in most cordless power tools are "Sub-C" size. They're easy to replace, if you can get the battery casing open. Buy tagged cells, link them together, adding thick wire or copper strip as needed, solder them quickly with a largeish iron ( 60W ). For 14.4v you will need 12 cells - I'd replace them all at the same time with fresh ones, not mix old & new. I used to get Sub-C NiCd from CPC Farnell for a couple of Pounds each, but they only seem to offer NiMH now. Order Code BT01302, 2.2AH, cost 3.65 each inc VAT for >10.

i zapped the battery for a 24V SDS bosch and after a couple of charge discharge cycles it worked a treat. not sure i would do it with a mig mind to much current for my liking i used 3 12V emergency light batteries

I killed off two dewalt batteries before I read somewhere online that the reason they die is by trying to eek the last bit of use out of a near-flat battery. It reverse-charges the weakest cells or something. If you have two batteries, swap them before they get too flat.
